The information in this section was derived from analysis of data (such as age, occupation, and income) from the 2000 U.S. Census. Using segmentation methods, our analysts created groupings based on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of each city and neighborhood.

   —Low-income, foreign-language-speaking urbanites.

   Lower-income population mainly employed in service jobs. Most have a high school education or lower.

2. Ramen Metros

   —Lower-income urban singles.

   Most rent their apartment or condo. Some have a college education and work in services and the professional sector.

3. Stretched Budgets

   —Lower-scale urban couples with children.

   Mixed educational status with some having a high school education and some college. Combined income low-to-moderate.
