California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The staff at Hughes Middle School has been on disappointment after another. Bullying is handled from the teachers all the way up to the principal with lack of communication with the parents and no follow through. When information is finally provided it is one sided incomplete and/or inaccurate. When confronted with all of the facts communication stops from their side and they do nothing. I would rather have my children in a school with good teachers and staff that care and treat the students with dignity support and as the individuals they are rather than a school that only cares about their image and test scores.

I am sort of mixed about this school. There's some pretty helpful and nice teachers while some are either lazy or absolutely demanding. Sports are really great here though. There's PE classes sports teams and time to play on the blacktop. The selection of electives is really high also. So far I've had Home Economics Computers and Aide duties. My overall statement about Hughes is that it's a great school very multi-cultural but it just has way too many students. I've seen a whole lot of misconduct at Hughes that teachers don't even pay attention to. But still it's the bee's knees you'll love it.

i love this school i currently attend and i think its the best the new principal ok she's a little anti social but our old pricipal mrs. daley was the best she is currently at milikan high doing the best i hope I LOVE HUGHES

I still currently go to Hughes and it's a great school. All of the teachers/staff are awesome strict some of them are but if you can behave and show you know they mean business they're really nice. Respect is also a big part of when we learn here. Our principal and teachers are constantly reminding us how to respond to an adult. Some students don't like this but because they are in fear of getting in trouble. If they follow this rule when stopped or even in any situation it could help. The academics and athletic programs and classes are great. Tests aren't always the best but the teachers make it so much fun! Our school looks great many students helping with the Hughes Goes Green program. I'm only going to 7th this upcoming year but I've lived a lifetime here. I definitely recommend going here. It's a wonderful experience.

Hughes is a very multi cultural school. very diverse in terms of race personalities and beliefs. you learn a great deal about people of the world with social interactions on top of a great service of education.

Hughes is a very well-rounded school. It boasts excellent academics (GATE and Honors Programs) athletics and various organizations that students may get involved in. The faculty and staff at Hughes M.S. care immensely about the students. We are proud to be past and present Hughes Parents!

this is overall a pretty great school. i enjoyed being in the GATE program. all the teachers are friendly and the campus is very clean. the only problem i have had was the PDA rule. even one simple hug can give you a chance to get suspended. id recomend any child to go to this school

I have been very disappointed in the quality of instruction my child has received in the TAP program. He has had almost no writing instruction in three years. Apparently the program was better in past years judging from older comments on Great Schools. Recently there has been great turnover in the TAP staff. For example there have been four 6 grade TAP teachers in the three years we have been at the school. This year all of the TAP math teachers are new transfers to the school. The social studies and English teachers transferred from the school just before my child started seventh grade and the replacements for them were awful. I understand that it is difficult for a principal to staff at the last minute but you have to wonder why are all the TAP teachers leaving? We will not be enrolling our younger child at this school.

I'd have to disagree with the previous parent. Huges does NOT run on cliques. My son is very athelitic and very popular; and he (like many others) did not make the basketball team or other teams in the past. However all of his friends do. So I disagree that teams are based on 'who-knows-who'. Our children aren't always going to make the teams they try-out for. Don't blame the school just except it for what it is - that there were other students who simply demonstrated that they were better. I tip my hat off to the teachers and admin staff for the overall experiences (positive) that they are giving to my child. I have no complaints. Hughes is a great school.

Hughes is a character diminshing school. This school runs on cliques. Don't encourage your child to try out for any team-sports if they are NOT in a particular clique. They will DENY anyone who they deem is not worthy. Even very athletic intelligent and well-behaved students. The goal is NOT to build self-esteem or team work but to create teams based on 'who-knows-who' type-groups. Hughes has disappointed me time after time. Luckikly my child excels in activities outside of this small world called Hughes.

I have had such a wonderful 'new' experience at this school since my daughter just entered sixth grade. This school participates in schoolloop which allows me to view my child's assignments/grades daily. Might I add that the faculty and staff alike are friendly and warm and the principal makes herself readily approachable! Great school...I was a teacher for LAUSD and LACOE for several yeras and I've rarely seen anything like it!

This a great school with understanding teachers and an awesome music program. Mr. Clausen is one of the best vocal teachers in the district. I love that there are so many clubs so I have a choice. There is 3 programs at hughes GATE Honors and College Prep. I am in Honors and I love it. Hughes is a great school!

I love Hughes Middle School! I would not have my daughter anywhere else. The staff students and programs are first rate. Hughes Middle School is an award winning school-Blue Ribbon Title One CA Distinguished school and SPARC recipient for its student support personnel. The music program is the best in the district. The art program is known throughout the city. The sports teams are stellar. The academic bar is high. All students who want to learn and succeed can at this school. It is located in a beautiful community supported by outstanding business partners and an active PTA. The Talent Achievement Program provides an incredible opportunity for students who are in need of extra challenges. The special education program is equally successful. The administrative team is caring and supportive. The school is diverse a microcosm of our society. The students are being prepared to be tomorrow's outstanding leaders and chanpions.
