California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

I cannot say enough good about this school - Principal Jenkins has created a little "best-practice heaven" right in the middle of Venice. I have worked in education for about 10 years. When we relocated to L.A. I poured over the schools to find the one that would be the best fit very concerned about finding a good fit for my two free-spirited gifted children who were bored out of their minds in MD public schools. This school's focus is on critical thinking inclusion and learning through play. It is extremely NON-traditional for a public school so I can see how other parents get freaked out by that. Trust me you will never get a better public school experience.... But SSH! don't tell anyone. let's keep this little gem our little secret ;)

This school is amazing; my son is in 3 grades and has a great teacher. He started 5 years ago with Mrs. Elson who is absolutely delicious and so kind with the little ones in Pre-K. My son loves her and hugs her each time he sees her. He will never forget his year with this fantastic teacher. Talking about academic skills his entire teachers have been really good so far and they all brought so much to him all those years. If you like to get involve in a great school community and like to follow your kids educations there is no doubt that you will absolutely love this school. In 2 years from now we will regret our time there and my son is already sad thinking that he will have to leave.

Wonderful neighborhood school! Great staff parents and students working hard to be at their best every day. A model for LAUSD Elementary Schools well rounded and offering enrichment in many areas!

We just moved here from belgium this summer and are truly amazed as to what cda has offer - absolutely no comparison to public schools in belgium! Starting with teachers really devoted to their pupils it's a joy to watch them a great staffed library after-school programs so numerous that it's hard to choose and perhaps most importantly a principal that seems to have made it his life's mission to make the school as good as it could possibly get. He knows all 500 students by name on about the second day extraordinary! Cda deserves all the support it can get as it really lifts the reputation of public schools in general.

One of the most impressive things about this school is the sense of community created by the parents. This is a big school but it's possible to make it smaller by particpating. The fund raising is unparalled. It's organized fun inclusive and most of all effective. Every penny raised benefits the kids. Principal Jenkins knows every childs name. Every child. He has lunch with the students every day. The classes are large I wish they were smaller. As a parent you have to be vigilante in seeking feedback about your child. Overall I believe this is the best LAUSD school in Venice.

Coeur d'Alene Avenue School is a pre-K through grade 5 school in Venice California. It is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Winner of LAEP's Excellence Award in 2000 and 2001 the Music Center's Bravo Award in 2007 and the distinction of California Distinguished School by the State of California's Department of Education in 2008 and 2012 Coeur d'Alene Avenue School prides itself on meeting the needs of all students who come from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences. Approximately 50% of our students are European American 20% are Latin American 15% are African American and 15% are of other ethnic backgrounds. Over ten languages are represented in our English learner population. Meeting the needs of such a diverse student body is a challenge we embrace. It is a wonderful community and an amazing school!

We are new to the school this year. I have found the parents to be so friendly and a wonderful atmosphere for my child and me. I love the fact that I can be involved and be a part of my child's success. The Principal is very active and professional. He knows all the children's names. I am so impressed with what my child has learned in just the first month of school. I am so proud to be a part of the CDA community!

This school has such a wonderful environment. The teachers are caring and inspiring I love the fact that they incorporate quite some enrichment experience into their curriculum like music drama art and regular visits to the library. The parents involvement is what helps all work so good.

Our family moved from Pennsylvania to MdR five years ago. My new employer said that CdA was an excellent school for our kindergarten son. Our daughter began the pre-K program with Ms. Elson the 18 months later. Son is now in middle school and daughter is in fourth grade at CdA. My husband and I feel so fortunate to be a part of an amazing community of students parents and administrators. We face the same budget cuts of every school in LAUSD but we rally together and maintain an excellent learning environment for our children. One of our greatest strengths is our diversity--socioeconomic religious and racial--CdA has it all. Our principal Mr. Jenkins is a skilled communicator and inspirational leader. He attends and WORKS at every single one of our fundraisers. Our teachers are creative and committed educators. Several of them recently applied for professional development grants and were successful in receiving funds and fellowships. I think the biggest testament to the strength of our school is the number of former parents who still support us with donations and volunteering long after their children have graduated. CdA is a hidden gem in LAUSD.

We are so exited to be a part of such an amazing school . Under a strong leadership of principal Jenkins ever present and fully immersed in the students and schools growth the school is thriving ! It showcases the teachers that are more than qualified for this very important job of teaching and guiding our children with integrity into maturity . It is also comprised of a very involved compassionate group of parents that give their energy and time to school lovingly . The spirit of school is one of strong community progressive thought and proactivity .

Coeur d' Alene Elementary is a wonderful school where the student body parents teachers and administration are constantly working together to enhance and enrich the academic and social experiences of it's students. CdA has been able to maintain many important enrichment classes and programs ensuring art music dance PE and new technologies are a regular part of every child's school experience. Our close community active booster club and superior principal and teachers together make CdA a truly great place to go to school!

I have 3 girls who go to this elementary school. As we arrive at school they each run in their own direction with big smiles and wide open attitudes. It makes me so grateful to be at a school that will produce a poet in 3rd grade a strong reader in 1st and curious and social pre- kindergartener. This school has a community parents and teachers who all feel the same way PE ARTS LIBRARY are a must so we all work hard to make it happen. CDA rules

CDA Elementary is a little gem in Venice CA. Having an amazingly diverse student body an exceptional group of teachers a great Principal and a super involved Parent Booster Club the school gets an A+++. When everyone works together as a team the kids really thrive and that's what's happening there. I couldn't be happier. I prefer this school over private school options since the diversity is exceptional and adds to a rich learning environment for my child. If only it went through to 12th Grade!

Each year I'm happier with Coeur d'Alene! My kids have loved every teacher they have had (pre-k all the way through 5th) and I feel so lucky to be a part of this community!

I am a parent to a 2013 kindergarten "graduate". I also have a 3 year old. We had an incredible year from every perspective but most importantly on the night before the last day of kindergarten my daughter said that she didn't want school to end. She was going to miss her teacher over the summer. We can't ask for more than that. The other reasons we love CDA are (1) the most dedicated Principal I have ever seen (more below); (2) an incredible community of passionate parents and (3) an awesome teacher. In terms of (1) I went to public school and graduated high school in 1983. In my world Principals were "figureheads". Perhaps they were doing something but you never really knew what it was. Principal Jenkins was at EVERY event I attended (including fundraisers on the weekends school performances (STAR music and more) Booster Club meetings painting benches on the weekend to beautify our school and on and on). His passion is apparent in his dedication and commitment. He is approachable and he listens. (2) and (3) speak for themselves....our Booster Club raised $260 000 and our kindy teacher is unparalleled (I hope my son has her in a few years).

I highly doubt our incredibly dedicated Principal is sitting around GREATSCHOOLS.COM writing fictitious reviews. My son is entering his last year at Coeur d'Alene and the last 5 years have not been without challenges. But one of the wonderful things about Principal Jenkins he listens to and takes every comment/suggestion/complaint whether its from a parent or a child very seriously. He then brings the kids together who have argued or name called and makes the children work out the issues with him present. Our kids are lucky to have a Principal who cares about each and every child at his school...

My family has had a truly wonderful experience over the years at Coeur d'Alene. I have one child who has gone all the way through another still there and another starting in the coming school year. My children have thrived in a community of dedicated teachers parents and kids. I have always found the principal and teachers very communicative and interested - always willing to talk about my children and respond promptly to my questions. Academically my children have done well and my oldest entered a rigorous middle school very well prepared. One of the greatest joys for me is that every day my kids love to go to school - that happens when kids feel confident about where they are going and respected by their peers and teachers. So looking forward to my youngest starting in August!
