Hi everyone! This is my first year in the 6th grade magnet program so I'm just starting to experience some new things but overall this school is amazing!! The teachers may be a little strict however they just want to set a good example for your child and to be responsible of how they act. The staff same too; they may frequently tell your child to stop talking but they are just doing for their own good. I've noticed there's a leadership program involved too. They are very good leaders along with their hilarious teacher. They also have these spirit games and various activities that will put your child in a spectacular mood! So far Lawrence is the best middle school ever!!!! GO LAWRENCE LIONS!!

The Gifted/Highly Gifted/High Ability magnet at Lawrence is fantastic! All of our teachers are highly trained experts in their respective field of study (no "combo" teachers who teach both Math/Science or English/History/Social Science). The magnet coordinator and teachers are always there to help students. The previous reviewer who commented on the math teacher I'm afraid does not understand what "differentiation" means in the context of gifted education. The magnet students take honors level courses that meet their need for an accelerated curriculum. The magnet teachers really encourage the development of higher level thinking skills and problem solving skills. Majority of students came from rigorous gifted magnet programs (Balboa Welby Way) but there is no clique. After school programs are great! Learning Zone Sports Dance etc. absolutely free of charge. I'm so glad I chose this magnet! When students graduate from a magnet program they will automatically get 12 points they can use for any high school magnet program of their choice!
The magnet program serves approximately 390 gifted highly gifted and high ability students on the campus of Lawrence middle school. It's a school within a school a model school of excellence and has an API of 1 000!
The magnet coordinator Mrs. Vallejo is the best! She has an open door policy and she works tirelessly to make sure the program runs smoothly. Teachers are great and so is the administration. I highly recommend this program!
I LOVE THIS PROGRAM! The Magnet Program at Lawrence Middle School offers amazing opportunities to the students. The classes are taught on a very high level encouraging the kids to use critical thinking and make connections. The teachers are carefully chosen for their knowledge of the subject their love of teaching and their special ability to teach gifted students. The homework assignments are thoughtful and reasonable as to content expectations and amount. All teachers and administrators are available for conferences any time you or your child has a question or wants to discuss something. I watched my daughter form strong study habits learn to organize her work and manage her time. become persevering in going in depth with her research and really become scholarly. Elective choices are outstanding. The opportunity to study in Hypocrites Circle or Model U.N. promotes global awareness world concerns and explore career goals. Very exciting.
Warning!!! Do not select this school for their Magnet Program. They only have four teachers in each grade level so if you have a problem with a teacher they will not switch you out of the class you are stuck in it for the year. The magnet math teachers leave a lot to be desired. The Magnet program thinks that the highly gifted child means pile on more work. They are not teaching them differentiated teaching geared for gifted students. I am extremely disappointed with the way this program has killed the love of learning in my child. I have seen the light in her dim it use to shine so brightly. Others will tell you that this is a great school and for them it was. I can tell you that if your child can learn when a teacher stands at the front of the class lecturing and the students take notes and when a teacher puts a problem on the board and without teaching a lesson tells the students to figure it out (basically teaching themselves) and have multiple projects from the different class going on at the same time then this is the school for you. My child needs differentiated teaching were the students participate more in the teaching and don't get weighed down with needless work.
I love my school!! and all the teachers!!! They are super helpful and i can always go to them for help when it is needed. I have the best teachers.
I can only rate the Magnet Program at this school and that I have found to be top notch. The Magnet Coordinator actually answers her own phone and goes out of her way to make sure the needs of the magnet students are met. She has an open door policy for incoming parents and that continues after you are settled in. The school spends the first month of the year drilling the children on non-bullying policies and safety procedures. That pays off during the year since this is a large campus. Students go about their business and any issues are dealt with immediately by both teachers and administration. Our daughter is challenged and having fun while making new friends. Fifth to sixth grade transition is a hard one especially within the LAUSD system. But the staff of Earnest Lawrence Magnet have made it as smooth of a transition as it could be. I am relieved that the choice we made has worked out well so far.
I love this school. Teachers and staff are awesome. The prinicipal and Mrs. Vallejo are great. The Cafeteria team are wonderful. The YS Team - Mr. Adam and Mr. Michelle are the best. I have never felt so good about a school before. My son loves going to school too. He had potatoes and chicken strips yesterday and he said "Mama - it was restaurant quality".
PROS The magnet school has truly amazing teachers. and that is probably the most important thing at any school. They were able to make classes interesting challenging and taught my child a lot. This school can be considered an exemplary one in the way bulling is handle. There were lots of field trips during the year and one overnight camp trip. CONS After school program is beyond bad. Students are forced to sit silent and still in the library from 3 to 6. On the days that were too hot/cold/rainy/windy/etc PE classes turned into TV watching. Overall about 10% of PE classes students spent watching movies like "Chicken Little".
Wonderful teachers terrific principal (Mr Schar) and second-to-none amazing band program with Mr. Wamhoff. My two children attended here all three years until they culminated last week. I am pleased with the high quality of education at this school. My children were in the after school program - one in the sports program which was terrific and the other in the homework program in the library. The homework program was a bit long and tedious (but it allowed my son to finish his homework) but I typically arrived from work around 5 pm so my oldest was able to get some exercise once he arrived home. I was thrilled that this school provided free aftercare for the students! My children and I have great memories here - both utilized some portions of the special ed program and the teachers they had were phenomenal and caring. Really am so happy with the quality of their education!
I'm currently and almost graduate of Lawrence and I have to say this school has changed me life. I'm in the Magnet and their Magnet program is superior. Honors are also very good but don't sign into the Regulars; just a tip. The teachers really do care about students' education and future and the staff there are very supporting. They have many games and events at the school and they make student life comfortable there. They do KNOW about bullying problems and they do HELP students and parents there with it. Overall this school is amazing and I would recommend giving this school a try! )
We are very grateful to have my daughter transition to Lawrence Middle School. This is our first year and so far this school has been excellent and kind to us parents. The faculty are very kind and always acknowledging every parents that enter the school and offices. The only problem and issues we have encountered is that there are children bullies coming from dysfunctional families/parents something every school have. But we made better choice than going to Columbus Middle School. We love this school the principal is very nice and funny guy ). First impression always counts.
I am NOT very happy with most teachers some students and the staff at the office and school. I do not feel welcome in this school. My child is in 8th grade now. For the past "almost" 3 years....teachers have been using "sarcastic" or "belittle" tones of voices to my child. I thought this school believes parent involvement and I did make calls to the office about several incidents about teachers and/or students they (teachers coordinator staff) don't even show concerns or discuss this issue professionally. This school have "You deserve a Put-Up!" pink slips and mix it up at Lunch Put-Up Slip. One student wrote and put it in the opening of my child's locker wishing her to kill herself. That's SICK!!! If my child shows this to the teachers or the staffs I guarantee you they will NOT do anything about it. SAD!!!!
I'm happy that my daughter attends to this school great teachers and you have to know them as a student to actaully appreciate them. The classes are great and the extracurricular activities are awesome
My daughter just finished three years at Lawrence and I truly feel that she received a top flight education. More than just academics she was welcomed into the school and made to feel an integral part of the community. She is very proud of the mural her Art class painted on the North side of campus and makes me drive her by it to see it even though she no longer attends. The school prepared her well for high school as she has managed to glide almost effortlessly through the beginning of 9th grade. Couldn't be happier with Lawrence.
Its the best school i have ever went to. I am in the 6th grade magnet and i think it rocks. Everyone is very welcoming and nice to u. My teachers are great. We do many fun stuff in our school such as dance offs games we have clubs for learning and much more. Its an awesome school. The GIFTED magnet is challenging but its worth it because you learn a lot from those projects. There isnt much homework in which u need to struggle on. Lawrence Middle School is the best school in the whole valley. =)
Im a 6th grade magnet student at Lawrence Middle School. The magnet is the best school you will ever think of going to. The teachers are AMAZING and all of the staff are very kind and they will help you with any problem you have. The kids in the magnet will welcome you like you are their best friend and they are the nicest kids in the world. There is never a lot of homework but a medium level of projects is given. If you are looking for an AMAZING school Lawrence Magnet Middle School is the place to be. Trust Me. )
I'm a Magnet kid and I love the school. THe teachers are really great and the projects are fun and unorthodox (as in they're unique). Good school great friends too. I do have to admit the regular program is really bad but the magnet is great. I dunno bout honors but Gifted is very good.
I'm a student here at Ernest Lawrence Middle School. A first year 6th grader and already on the first day of school i felt very pleased with everyone welcoming me.
