California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

*Warning* Save your child! My daughter is in the 6th grade at Mt. Gleason and she is an honor student. Last week a student kicked her for no reason at all and broke her tail bone. My daughter called me in pain and I took her to the emergency room. The doctors couldn't believe it. I went to the school the next day and requested to speak to the principal and they all passed the buck. The office sent me to the counselor and the counselor didn't want to deal with it so she sent me back to office. The principal didn't want to talk to me either. When she finally did she made no big deal about it. I asked to file a police report and she called the school police it's been 5 days and the police officer hadn't been able to do anything about it. They are treating us now like we are the problem. This other girl was never suspended or expelled. I have left messages to speak to the principal....Do you think she has had the audacity to get back to me???? "NO"! It is unfortunate in this day and age when we are all trying to fight against bullying that the staff would take this matter so lightly. If you truly want your child to get a good education DO NOT SEND THEM HERE!!!!!

Mt.Gleason Middle School offers parents and students opportunities beyond my expectations. The teachers contact you when your student needs some extra assistance in any given area. There are so many clubs that the students can take part in. SRLA Beat the Streets Wrestling Equestrian Club Chess Club Orchestra and more! These young people are learning how to be independent thinkers and make good choices. Pick up the phone stop by meet the staff and paraprofessionals that are dedicated to your student's academic and personal achievements.

This school is a great place to send your child. The teachers know what they're doing the school is nice. I love having my child go here. They really like it too.

Do not send your child to MGMS. The staff will not follow-up with communication and your child will only be required to pass with the bare minimum of educational skillsets. Kids run rampant in the afterschool program and the lack of care on behalf of the teachers is astounding. This place should be closed down.

I am going to be in 8th grade and have attended Mt. Gleason since 6th grade. I think this school is horrible. It's like a child's worst nightmare. It's full of ignorant students who feel its necessary to torment kids and give them a hard time at school. I see this everyday and there isn't one moment where something negative isn't happening. The teachers here are pretty bad and there was only one teacher I had that I thought was actually good. I always hear students talk about how lazy their teachers are and how they don't act as they should. I see graffiti everywhere gum racism bullying and fights. Everyone who thinks high of themselves is always judging others. I often see a cop car driving away some violent kid away. I would not recommend this school to anyone. The only reason I'm still at this school is because I have made a few close bonds and I'm not near a better school; my only option is this one. I really with there could at least be a decent school near with my friends. You can't even play a sport at P.E. without getting judged by the peers for your actions or appearance. This school contains many people who do/talk about sexual activities. Do not send your kids here!!

The teachers are great! They do their best and care. The school is old and should be torn down and rebuilt. Non-Hispanic students are in the magnate program. In the regular classes Hispanic students will distract and tease in Spanish the kids that don't speak Spanish. At MG lots of verbal insults and cursing in Spanish and English. I would not encourage the sports programs after school particularly in the gym. Poor coaching unfairness no instructions on the sports rules or sportsmanship. Actually the coaches enjoy the opportunity to play at work while students watch. Everyone does not get to play because the coaches themselves have priority in playing the majority of the time. No encouragement for girls to participate. Avoid the gym and the afterschool program in general because it poorly ran and there is no supervision because the coaches are busy playing basketball and soccer themselves. As a results they don't see the pushing hitting or the rough playing. Speak with your child about the events of the day. Ask your child what he or she saw heard or experienced at Mt. Gleason and it will be disturbing. Report bullying if it involves your child or not.

My daughter just transferred in from a private Catholc school into the 6th grade @ this school and I have to say that I am impressed with the honors program @ this school. It's strict wholesome learniing environment. The teachers are passionate and dedicated to teaching and my child is growing academically. The music program and extracuricular activities offered at the school are excellent as is their after school program. My daughter's peers are all geared towards academics and are all very competitve; it's a great learning environment. I strongly recommend this school to any parent that is looking for a strong academic program and positive learning environment.

I gave this school 'one star' because unless I chose at least one star I was not allowed to submit /express my opinion. Much like the atmosphere at this school over the past three years. Strong arm mentality. If you are unable to send your child anywhere else and are stuck for reasons beyond your control do not put the responsibility of staying safe - on your child - aka staying away from trouble - or to expect them to be in control of their education - when they are in attendance there. Better advice -- Parents must be prepared to NEVER speak or write anything to the teachers or administration regarding a "parental concern" for your childs education or safety . Parents must be prepared to counsel their child to look the other way when they see bullying and to go with the IN crowd . Be sure they do not need to use the restroom there.. Have $$ for tutoring for actual cst content test prep. Last begin their training early to run a 7-8 minute mile upon demand or else after all is said and done in 8th grade you will be blindsided with realizing SRLA is so popular because an "F" in PE can cause havoc when submitting HSchool applications . Just some basic survivor suggestions.

Hi I'm a 7th grader attending MGMS. Mount Gleason is an absolute dump. The environment is dirty and unsettling. There's gum and graffiti everywhere. The graffiti is absolutely disgusting depicting private parts or hate messages towards other students or teachers. The community is violent. Racism foul language fighting insults toward students or teachers drug use or even sexual reference is seen or heard 24/7. Security is always being called in a classroom. 8th graders are administrating the attendance office most of the time because of a leadership program resulting in messed up attendance records. Young adults should NOT be running the office. Some of the teachers lack strictness and are letting the students run around and yell in the classroom. Learning is seldom because the teachers are mostly showing nothing but videos in class or talking about off topic things the whole time without assigning any work. I will not be attending 8th grade here. Please do not send your child here.

As community residents with 2 school age children we were lured to this campus when they recently opened a gifted program . After two years it is clear they are similar to a bait and switch. The teachers in 6th grade throw everything and the kitchen sink assignments at the children without much purpose behind them and at least one of the 7th grade teachers is coasting thru the year showing videos almost exclusively as a teaching method . Outside class assignments are non existent and my children are bored in class and sick of the sound of their teachers voices. They bring their ipods to listen to music in class and their notebooks are filled with mostly independent drawing done during the copious amount of "free time" daily. That's about it. They have learned to be lazy and disinterested in learning since attending this school. Neither of them are interested in reading anything . Needless to say we wont be returning next year. Too bad for the entire community that this is what is offered to its growing children.

Mount Gleason? MGMS consists of violence drugs and rascist white gangs damaging and destroying Mount Gleason. School is troubled and filled with drugs and horrible teachers. MG does not even provide a sound enviorment of learning try other magnets or middle schools such as Porter Nobel or Lawrence.

I'm a 9th grader who just got out of Mt. Gleason and I am so happy I went there. I've learned so much and I had the best and most helpful teachers. Sure it has its flaws but its worth it. I'm very sad to leave.

I was a 7th grade Math and Science teacher at Mt.Gleason 2009. (let go due to budget cuts) After reading the CST scores for the year...I have to say that I am so proud of my students who raised their percentage from 30% to 47% in Math. I am so honored to have been a part of that increase.

I am a 6th grader going into 7th grade this year. I do not recomend this school to any parent who wants a well rounded kid. The overall enviorment of the school is terrible. You cannot go 20 mins without hearing foul language used by the students. Some of the teachers are good and can really relate to the students and put in extra time with them. I do not plan on staying all 3 years. Oh and I almost forgot the teachers and staff members are not strict at all when it comes to the behavior of the students and they are not able to controll the class.

As a 7th grade student i have to say that Mt. Gleason is one of the best schools ever been to and I plan on going to this school next year also. I highly recomend this FANTASTIC junior high school to all parents.

Hi...my name is Mr. Tushnet (Mr. T) I will be teaching Algebra 1 for the Fall of 2008. Teachers at Mt. Gleason try their best to see that every student gets the finest education the teacher can give them. Does every teacher in their subject area teach the same way give the same homework treat every student the same way No. By and large the teachers at Mt. Gleason know their subject area well. If one of my math students has troubles in comprehending the lessons I tutor them at Nutrition or for a short period after school. From time to time I have taught these same students on Saturday and special 90 minute classes twice a week after school. My door is always open for any parent to sit and observe me in my classroom. I am proud of the job I do like most of the teachers here.
