California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

Serrania is back and ready to rock! When we first started three years ago it was at a low and all because of the principal. But with perseverance and support from amazing parents we were able to replace her with our current principal Mrs. Wedda. She is sweet yet stern when needed and is an absolute go-getter. She is open to suggestions and help from parents and will make sure she gets the job done; no matter how big or how small. Even the teachers like and respect her. Speaking of the teachers we have some amazing ones that truly make a difference in our kids' lives. Hands down we have the best teachers you can ever hope for for your kids. This past year not only did we get an amazing principal but we also became a charter and our API score is now over 900!!! Our FOS is also another great aspect of Serrania. With the help of our parent volunteers our kids are not lacking anything. We were able to open our science lab art lab computer lab and music all with the help of FOS and our Charter money. It's great to see Serrania back on top where it belongs.

The District is one thing the ratings here should be based on the school. Serrania is a great school and has come a long way in the last year! The new principal is fantastic - very student conscious very parent conscious. We have a music program art classes PE computer lab dancing - lots of enrichment activities! We are about to get a new MAC computer lab and a Science Center! The sky is the limit with Serrania and I am so proud of impact we are making on the community. This is the place to be!

Serrania is a great school and a wonderful learning community. The staff are top-notch and experienced. The parent organizations Friends of Serrania and Serrania PTA work well together and they fill the calendar with events that the kids love. The change to charter and a new principal seem to have given the school a chance to make a clean break from the troubled terms of its two previous sub-par principals. A lot of parents gave up on this school a few years back and left because they objected to overall LAUSD policy and as you can see by some reviews here there is lingering bitterness. (Notice how the negative reviews here don't mention the quality of instruction and are generally focused on personal parental politics rather than overall educational experience?) But when the dust settled from the mass departure those who remained at Serrania watched test scores soar (over 900 on our API) and saw the overall atmosphere on campus transformed. It really is a kinder more positive place to be these days. The teachers are the best and the kids here know it. We're not going anywhere else. Go Serrania!

I have to say this is such a great school and the teachers and staff are amazing!!

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Serrania! My son has always had wonderful teachers. The new principal is absolutely wonderful! She is so dynamic and interactive. The scores are going up - this school is wonderful! I love it

Its great to have a new principal however LAUSD is still very broken. as a current parent that has experienced the school for 7 years its sad to blame former parents that did more for the school than anyone I have seen. They left due to the LAUSD disregard for children and teachers. You can only fight so long before better options over take the drama this school has offered. While its getting better don't forget why we all have the amazing programs that were put in place by our peers before us.

Serrania is a wonderful elementary school inside a beautiful residential neighborhood community that provides excellent support for the school. The students are diverse in background which provides a wonderful and rich mix to the general makeup of the student body. The only complaint that I heard made previously was in respect to the principal who was admittedly lacking a personal touch. This year a new young dynamic principal has taken her place and her energy enthusiasm and good nature with the students and parents have rectified any complaints that could have been made previously. I have two boys in the school currently and two others on their way. While some are looking to charters for the answer Serrania also now a charter is a solution in itself. We are committed to the school as are most of the parents that we know. I highly recommend it.

Serrania is a great school. We have a new principal who is a positive influence at the school. The teachers are great. The school has really fun events and a great group of involved parents. Scores have gone up this year and that is a direct reflection of the hard working teachers. The school is now an affiliated charter.

This will be my son's third year at Serrania. We have had a very positive experience at Serrania the entire time. All of the teachers my son has had have been inspirational caring and smart. I had no problems with the former Principal in fact she was always very nice to me and my family. I think that the parents that left the school were actually trouble makers and it is good that they are gone. The school is much more pleasant with out them. The active parents at the school are dedicated hard working and nice. All in all a great school.

This school has a great community of kids and parents. We have a refreshing bright new principle that has reawakened Serrania and all of its potential. The teachers are smart and committed. The campus is very pretty with many new renovations by our green team such a tree planting murals and planters for gardening. The school has recently become a school for enriched studies which is very exciting. A new science lab is being developed first on the agenda. There is a great SAS program for gifted students and many after school enrichment opportunities.

Serrania is a wonderful neighborhood school! We have weathered the storm of the old principal and are now a Charter School with an emphasis on enrichment and the arts. We have a wonderful new principal who is sharp and kind and willing to work with the parents to improve the school and make it one of the best in the area. The teachers are good and the parents are down to Earth.

The teachers and kids at this school are great. I know that the atmosphere at the school has not been ideal because people didn't like the principle and many involved parents left the school because they were discouraged by her but I'm hoping that the new principle will bring a new energy. The school has great potential. I hope some of the parents who left will return again and make the school as great as it could be!

Although there are a lot of issues with the current principal (very unapproachable and bad recess/lunch rules) she is leaving Serrania very soon!! My children have been at Serrania for many years and the teachers are consistently excellent. They keep the children engaged and interested in their education. The children of Serrania are warm and kind and the parents are too. Hopefully the new principal wil bring new energy and light into the teachers and childrens lives but for now I am so grateful to have my children there with the marvalous teachers.

The teachers are great; PTA does a wonderful job as well. Only gave three stars because the principal is not approachable at all and is actually pretty rude. Whenever I see any of the teachers either at school or on occasion outside of school they stop and chat and are so welcoming. The principal is exactly opposite. I approached her once with a simple question and she yelled at me. In the last few years we have lost many bright students to other schools. We need a new principal that will shape this formerly wonderful school back to where it needs to be.

If anyone is looking for a good school stay away from this school. I agree with all the comments regarding the Principal of this school. I wonder if LAUSD is aware of all the problems that this school has. She really needs to be taken away from all these children. She has major character and anger issue. She is rude and unable to communicate with parents let alone to children. All the parents that I know of are looking for other schools. She must be removed immediately.

I don't know if it's a LAUSD thing or the lack of strong leadership however this school seriously oversold us and undelivered to our son. We along with several families are looking for new schools for our children. It's a shame.

This school used to be good the principal just ruined it. I had the pulled out my child from the school. Very sad.

this school used tobe good bout the latest principal changed every thing even the rate of the school i am sure the staff of the school are not happy because of her and also parents i hope LAUSD cares abut it and they do somthing to this rude women.

I agree with all the latest reviews of Serrania and its prinipal. She is rude and crazy and seems to have no clue how to run a school. How could lausd allow someone this vindictive and cruel to run a school with our children. Someone has to speak out and have her removed.

This school used to be a wonderful exciting and safe school to attend. When the latest principal took over everything went down hill. While this school does still have wonder teachers a lot them have lost their focus on teaching because of the principal and all of her antics. What other principal do you know of has to take ANGER MANAGEMENT???! This school has lost so many wonderful parents and I don't see it getting any better until this woman is removed. LAUSD needs to get a clue and remove her before enrollment is at ZERO!!!!!
