Drug dealing? Cheating? Fights? Bad students? Bad teachers? What are you parents thinking? I as parent wouldn't say anything bad about this school. Its a VERY GOOD school. I transferred my child out of North Hollywood HS where the students CHEAT their way out of high school where its full of gang members that have tattoos all over their bodies students who do drugs most the students drop out fights cops arrests. No Van Nuys HS is not like that at ALL. They have this AMAZING Magnet Program. My daughter is in the Medical Magnet Program. Northridge Hospital Medical Center and Providence Holy Cross Hospital have provided opportunities for our medical magnets to explore the healthcare industry as have a number of healthcare facilities around the district where these students perform volunteer hours required as tenth and eleventh graders. Now that's a SCHOOL!!! Most 10th graders pass the CAHSEE which really doesn't happen at many schools. I went to watch the MARCH BAND and they were OUTSTANDING every year they win 1st place! I as a mother who is judgmental about schools I fell in love with this school. Totally worth it!!

This is one of the most amazing high schools you or can go to. The marching band is amazing and many of the kids at school have so much pep! This school has many amazing teachers like Mr.Furman. As a residential student the only thing i hate is that I'm looked down on because I'm not in a magnet program. Nevertheless this school is awesome! You should definitely come here we have many cool clubs and electives!

Van Nuys High School has some great programs. Besides the three magnets there is a Manufacturing Academy Program and an Automotive Program. This tech savvy school has 22 computer labs and uses a community networked web 2.0 website

This is one of the finest high schools you or your children can attend. We boast the highest advanced placement (AP) passing rate in LAUSD. This is no small feat as the national passing rate for the AP exam is well below 50%. There exists only 2 high schools that are on the same tier that of which Van Nuys is on which is Granada and North Hollywood. These 3 schools are one of the few schools that offer a selection of all AP classes. I can't say the performing arts magnet is heavily focused on school but if you are interested in the arts program our school is top notch. The marching band wins 1st in all of LAUSD consecutively every year. There are no drop outs in the math-science or medical magnet. It is a very competitive school and there are many caring teachers. My only complaint regarding this school is the social warfare between residential and magnet students. Magnet students resent the fact that residential test scores lower the school's ranking and the residential students resent the preferential treatment of magnet students. I am currently a Jr. in the Math/Science magnet. This school prepares you for college. I'm taking 5 AP classes this year.

I am the parent of a 9th grader in the Math and Science Magnet who is also involved in school athletics. I could not have asked for a better school for my son. Teachers challenge him and prepare his for college level study skills. He had adjusted well to the work/atudy load as well as the team sport schedule and is truly happy with his high school experience so far.

Van Nuys High School is a gem in the Valley. It has three outstanding magnet schools on campus and a highly successful Advanced Placement program.

Van Nuys High School is really quite remarkable. I'm in the Performing Arts magnet and contrary to popular belief we also take academics seriously while maintaining our extracurricular activities. Our fabulous dance team has won nationals for the last five or so years. Our vocal and theatre programs are also great. Our robotics team have gone to international heights. Medical and math/science magnet are also great. Outstanding APs and awesome teachers notably the History department. Very carefree and diverse environment. Admittedly resident school is not as disciplined but not bad.

The school is the only LAusd school with 3 very demanding magnets -- math science performing arts and medical magnet. Its API with includes the resident population and the 3 magnets jumped 53 points last year. That is exceptional. The teachers are first rate and are led by one of the best principals in LAUSD. There is an active Magnet Parents Association that has brought Princeton Review on campus and the American Field Service International Scholarships. For years the school has had the highest AP test passing rate of all of LAUSD. Its science bowl team is always in the mix of finalists. Visit the website at

this school rocks! especially the magnet programs they are completely different than what you may hear about the resident kids the Performing Arts magnet has great programs and the Dance team won 1st place at every competition they attended against all the schools in the district i really recommend it!

It's a great school! There are some questionable teachers there but not many. They have great magnet programs!

If you're in the Math/Science Magnet program then the level of teaching is fairly high for a public school. The competition is also stiff because everybody wants to do well and previous graduating classes went on to great schools (i.e. Harvard Princeton Yale MIT University of Chicago Brown UC Berkeley <tons of people went there> UCLA). Some of the teachers can be oddball but you get a demanding level of coursework merely because every other student around you is just as good or better (i.e. 1600 SAT scores photographic memory & other extraordinary gifts). The Performing Arts program has a lot more to offer for drama and instrumental versus vocal and dance.

Van Nuys High School has a performing art magnet- with the entire school having access to the benefits. There is an extremely qualified math department. The number of AP's offered is high and the pass rate is also high.
