i have a 4th and 5th grader at walgrove. we have been here since Kinder. this school has provided a safe and inspiring place for my children and our community. The walgrove wildlands and organic gardens are the biggest in all of west LA. this value of nature and education the whole child - is at the core for our school. i am so grateful for our amazing teachers and their gifts. our children are developing the skills to grow into truly exceptional citizens.

I have two children at Walgrove since kindergarten. My overwhelming feelings as my 5th grader gets ready to matriculate is gratitude for Walgrove and grief about her leaving. I couldn't have asked for a better experience for her. The teachers she's had are dedicated and talented. The extra programs funded by the committed booster club include "Council in Schools" which fosters empathy and compassion and Studio a stellar hands-on STEAM based learning program which my daughters love among others. The school wide Core Beliefs emphasize social-emotional growth as a necessary component of learning. And the community of families involved embraces its' diversity. As a result my girls are thriving emotionally and academically in a supportive neighborhood school. That and all of their playdates are nearby! There's so much more so come to the tour!
This school is a gem! So many special programs to truly excite children in the learning process. The theater program has an amazing teacher through PS Arts. There is hands-on project based learning with the Art Studio classes led by two incredible teachers. Not to mention an Enrichment Program that gets all the teachers teaching a favorite topic - maybe it's a language class or teaching chess or even doing set design for the upcoming Musical Theater show this spring Seussical! Check out the Wildlands - quite the outdoor classroom! And if you see a Monarch butterfly - it may have been born on the Walgrove campus! Truly a wonderful community of educators parents kids and families. Lucky to attend this neighborhood school.
My children have been very happy at Walgrove. At Walgrove we are a diverse group in every way yet we work together to provide a rich experience for all our children. I say "we" because it is a partnership between the teachers the administration and the parents. My daughter started middle school this year after six years at Walgrove and she was not only prepared academically but emotionally and socially as well. There are so many things that contribute to this From the award winning teachers to the Maker Lab/Studio and the STEAM projects to the PS Arts classes to the outdoor education opportunities in both the edible garden and the Walgrove Wildlands to the small group differentiated learning and of course the integration of the special ed and typical ed kids and the practice of counciI am sure that the kids who leave Walgrove elementary will be young people who are confident informed willing to fail and to learn from it to work as a team to care about others to love learning and to express themselves. That's what I call a well rounded education. That's what a neighborhood school with a caring community can be.
I am responding as both a parent AND the principal at Walgrove Elementary. I moved my own children to Walgrove because I believe so strongly in the work we are doing as a school community and I wanted them to benefit from the great teachers and programs here. At Walgrove I am surrounded by intelligent and committed adults (both staff and parents) who join me in continuing our work to make this an exemplary neighborhood school. I am proud of our implementation of the Common Core where we have the flexibility to innovate and try new things to support students' critical thinking collaborative and problem solving abilities. We also offer specialized support in PE Instructional Assistants and our innovative "Studio Lab" program which supports our teachers' implementation of STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics). We are an organically diverse campus--ethnically socio-economically and include a high representation of students with special needs which all contribute to our wonderful diversity. We are a wonderful small neighborhood school with a wealth of opportunities to offer students!
I'm the dad a new kindergartener at Walgrove this year. As west Los Angeles parents the home school option near us wasn't the right fit so we applied for all of the charters last summer. At the same time our friends turned us on to Walgrove where they send their 7 year old. Permitting into another public elementary is difficult but in this case it was under enrolled so none of that was necessary. We loved it so much we turned down one of the charters we got into and came to Walgove. The parent involvement is amazing. The principal is fantastic and very approachable. We love the teachers and are excited for all the ones our boy will be learning from in the coming years. Fundraising has created so many great programs which make a truly well rounded learning experience. Of course it has some challenges but every school does. The benefits by far out way the drawbacks. Come take a tour you will love it.
My son is a kindergartener at Walgrove and we love it! I have been shocked by how much he is learning -- all while having great fun. He is reading and writing beautifully. Importantly he is EXCITED to read books at home and to attend school. We have been so happy with his teacher. The community is amazing -- very active and down to earth people. The teachers are first rate. The programs are programs you would expect at a private school art studio where the kids do collaborative projects; council where they talk about feelings; the walgrove wildlands with butterflies and an organic garden; a theatre arts program etc. Definitely tour the school if you are looking for public elementary. Honestly we applied to private schools for kindergarten because we didn't know anything about our resident school which is Walgrove. Before deposits were due I toured Walgrove and was blown away. SO happy we decided on Walgrove.
Having taught at four other schools in my 14 years with the district here is what I appreciate the most about Walgrove 1) The strong sense of community. People here care about one another are involved and passionate about the school and children's education. This is a truly diverse community. 2) The caliber of the staff. Collectively this is the most creative passionate unique and intelligent group of people I have ever worked with. It is an extremely dynamic place to teach and learn at and I truly appreciate our differences! 3) Our Core Beliefs cater to the whole child and emphasize creativity and innovation. Our various programs and practices (Studio Wildlands PS Arts PE Differentiated Instruction Project-based Learning Collaboration Council Restorative Justice) reflect our collective belief that children's social and emotional growth are the foundation for their academic growth. Walgrove offers children a unique and rich public school experience!
I left my neighborhood schools to drive the extra few miles for this hidden gem! I was looking for smaller class sizes a strong parent presence devoted principle and teachers community involvement and as much enrichment as a school could offer. WOW! I couldn't have asked for more! Studio lab PE theatre arts violin outdoor garden classroom mobile computer lab commitment to special education with integration STEAM (science technology engineering art math) focus council for resolving conflicts (and for other instances less "serious" in nature like practicing talking with feeling) free after school program child chosen enrichment sessions and on and on. As each month goes by I find that I have really hit the jackpot and I am sooooo happy that I made the decision to send my son here.
I've been touring a lot of schools on the west side and come to realize how lucky my family is to live walking distance from Walgrove Elementary. A school that offers exactly everything I've seen at any other private/magnet or charter school in our area - if not more. After all these years here we couldn't be happier! Peace Love and Public school!
This is a wonderful neighborhood school dedicated to providing the best education to our children. The teachers are passionate the principal is dedicated and involved and the staff are warm welcoming and knowledgeable. The class sizes are beneficially small so teachers really get to know all their kids and can maximize the classroom experience. I'm amazed at what the parent community has done within the school as well as with out-reach to provide additional funding for the school and it's many enrichment offerings like STEAM the Studio Lab the Wildlands and it's new Theater program. Parent volunteering whether with time or money (or both) is now a standard part of attending an LAUSD school whether you're at a charter or not. I don't think Walgrove pressures parents for either but they do stress the importance of both by mapping out exactly how school funds and donations are allocated and asking families to contribute however they can. My son loves this school and has loved all his teachers. We left a bi-lingual charter to come to Walgrove and have not regretted our decision. Support this amazing local school and send your kids here - they will love it too and thrive!
I love this school so much. The community is amazing the teachers are motivated and think outside the box. There is an excellent studio program the STEAM program is exceptional there is PE a library with a librarian and arts. This school is a perfect example of what a neighborhood school should be. It has steadily gotten better over the years as the few mediocre teachers that were once there have finally retired or moved on. Walgrove is solid real and just because it isn't an SAS school or isn't a charter does not mean a darn thing.
I have enjoyed working at Walgrove for over 10 years now. I'm so happy to have chosen Walgrove over another school that at the time was in a much better place and more established. Since then Walgrove has gone through quite a transformation becoming a neighborhood school with high community and parental involvement working alongside the teachers. We continue to improve at meeting the needs of our diverse learners through enrichment programs STEAM Studio Lab small groups differentiated hands on teaching and great professional development just to name a few. I am proud to say that I work at Walgrove and would love my very own children to have the Walgrove experience!
I have taught high school of rears and have an M.Ed. from UCLA. To say that education is important to me is an understatement. I felt the search for the right school was stressful. Not only are you looking for the right place but you are navigating a system that is sometimes disorganized. To say that the clouds parted when we got our call from Walgrove is an understatement. I wasn't sure where I would get in but I was hoping for Walgrove. I forewent many of the popular charters that called last minute and stayed at this wonderful neighborhood school and my children's lives are better for it. Walgrove is a truly progressive school. They practice Council and use restorative practices when they need discipline. No one is "benched" ever. The fact that my girl's social/emotional needs would be respected was a HUGE plus. Academically they thrive. The teachers are AMAZING. Truly!! And that in itself makes it a gem. Friends of Walgrove fundraises to put aides in EVERY room an amazing STEAM/Studio program (which is hands down why I picked this school) unlike anything I saw a gardening program (Wildlands kinder garden edibles garden) drama library PE and more.
I looked at many schools before finding Walgrove. What a gem! Small classes enrichment great teachers and an incredible parent community. From the STEAM lab to the Wildlands it's truly an incredible place. A great balance of academics with attention to social and emotional development. We feel so lucky to be part of such a special place.
I have been really disappointed by this school's long term ability to gets its act together. It embodies all of the dysfunctionality with the 'race' and other politics endemic to LAUSD. Terrible leadership and organization. Poor academics. There is no real leadership or unifying vision at the school. Students there are just 'going through the motions'.
I just love our neighborhood school. It has been an amazing experience with a tight community. My girls have flourished here. Both of them are completely different and their needs have been met. My oldest is in fifth grade and is very sad to be leaving our dear school. Like every school there are doers and takers. You will find that everywhere. I am glad to say my daughters husband and I are part of the doers. The spirit of Walgrove is that of doers. If you want change be part of the solution. ) The reason our API will not be the highest is because of the high iep students at our school. These students are an asset to the school. They teach our kids empathy and compassion. They are amazing. I am frustrated with people that are all about the number game. Life is sooooo much more than that.
I have a 3rd grader and a Kindergartener at Walgrove. I LOVE this school. I drop my kids off and head to work and know that they will have a wonderful day. The Principal teachers staff and parents are amazing. My kids are exposed to so many fantastic programs ranging from a wonderful garden program (including the Walgrove Wildlands) a Studio lab program (which is hands on project based learning) small group instruction and an amazing theatre and movement program (PS Arts). Every week is an week full of excitement! The parents are very involved and are constantly getting grants to create even more amazing programs (they just got a grant from Google). I couldn't agree more with the last few posts. Walgrove has been an amazing school for my children. With programs like Differentiation Groups Art Studio PS Arts the Wildlands Shakespeare Club - I know my kids are getting access to a lot of individualized teaching and enrichment classes that are not offered at most schools. Grants by Google & Tommy Hilfiger are going to brings some fantastic opportunities to Walgrove. Our teachers staff and administrators are extremely dedicated to the students and are constantly striving to make Walgrove a amazing place. My children feel safe and comfortable at this little school and the fact that it's in our neighborhood makes it all the better! And the parent participation is above and beyond - I am proud to be a part of the Walgrove community and so are my kids.
We have looked at many many schools in the neighborhood and Walgrove - is like getting a private school education - nestled into this little community neighborhood public school. Teachers come early and stay late. They respond to all your needs and go above and beyond. Everything from Shakespeare club to the STEAM Maker Lab ! They have a reggio inspired Kinder teacher and the 4th grade takes a field trip to Sacramento!! No other public school is doing this kind of work with children. We love it!
