Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP)

In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level. Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.

I Attended this school and just graduated . I went there since kindergarten and absolutely hated it . I tried to change schools but my parents wouldn't allow it . It really made me mad . This school was the worst school . My Kids will not be attending this school because of the lack of help various bullying and poor teacher help . I do not recommend this school at all !

My son attended Mattawan middle school (all of 6th and half of 7th). At the time I didn't know that he has Aspergers. I tried working with the faculty and administration but got no where with them. I once set up a meeting with the principal counselor and three of his teachers to discuss how I could help him at home and work with them to get him to do his homework. One teacher showed up and informed me that no one else would be showing up. The counselor had to take his wife shopping and the principal was too busy. I took off work to attend this meeting. My son was picked on and harassed by other students on a daily basis but he was the one who was punished by the principal. In the end I removed him as the principal threatened to put him through the juvenile system because he was doing only 17% of his work (that is what she told me). He is very smart and could easily have completed it. What I didn't know was that he has texture issues and can't stand the texture of many types of paper. After removing him from Mattawan I had him tested and discovered that he has Aspergers. Too bad Mattawan didn't bother to help me figure that out.

I wrote a review in February 2008 - at the time I had a 7th and 10th grader. I now have a senior at Mattawan HS and a junior in college. My opinion has changed a little bit about Mattawan Schools. We are about to lose our high school principal and another Elementary principal so I see change on the horizon. Strengths College preparedness extra curriculars overall experience. Weaknesses COUNSELING. Difficult for both students and parents to communicate and a very rigid approach. A source of frustration. Would we put our kids through this system again? Yes. Is any school system perfect? No. Both of our kids were accepted to their first choice for college so we are looking to the future. We're hoping that the new leadership will keep the standards high.

My son has been in Mattawan Schools since 1st grade and he is now a freshman in high school and we have never had a bad teacher or counselor. Every person we been in contact with has been wonderful plus Mattawan is best school in the area to prepare your child for college.

For the past 4 years we have tried to worth with the teachers and administration when small issues have arisen and have gotten nowhere. Some of the teachers are wonderful but some are not fit to be called teachers and have no place in the classroom. The counseling office does not have the best interest of the students in mind they seem to be 'us against them' when it comes to any kind of issue or need. I personally have talked with over 20 parents that have complained about one particular English teacher and yet the administration tells every parent that they have never received a complaint from anyone else. Lies and cover ups seem to the be status quo. We would not recommend this school to other families.

I have 5 children who have attended or are attending Mattawan schools. We are hopefully moving soon and I cannot wait to get out of this district. There are some teachers worth their paycheck but many more are simply not able to teach at all. So disappointed by our whole experience here. If you have a child with any sort of learning disability then DO NOT SEND HIM/HER here that includes any child with ADD or ADHD. The middle school teachers completely broke my son and told him he was worthless. After adjusting his medication he is now a straight A student. The administration cares more about spewing test scores than individualized student learning styles. If you move to this district be prepared to send your child with a lot of money. They'll need it for everything the school charges for. From athletic fees choir fees band fees club fees paper pens tissues cleaning supplies snacks and drinks for the whole class to share etc etc etc Hopefully we will be gone soon.

MATTAWAN LIKES STUDENTS WHOLE EXCEL........DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO MATTAWAN IF THEY HAVE LEARNING DISABILITIES OR ARE IN SOME OTHER WAY DISABLED. THE STAFF IS HORRIBLE WITH FOLLOWING THE IEP'S THAT ARE SET FORTH. ALL TALK NO ACTION. THE STAFF GOSSIPS CONTINUALLY ABOUT FAMILIES THAT ARE NOT UP TO THEIR RICHY RICH STANDARDS . NEVER SEND A CHILD TO MATTAWAN THAT REQUIRES ANY SPECIAL NEEDS.

I graduated from Mattawan Schools years ago and dreamed of coming back to teach there to give back to a community that has given so much to my family and friends. Choosing to send my child to this school system was one of the wisest decisions I have ever made. The staff at Mattawan is truly dedicated and I am very proud to count myself as one of them. Graduates of this school system continually move back to the area after starting a family of their own. That one single fact says a great deal about the system itself. We are truly blessed.

I am a student at Mattawan. I've gone to Mattawan my whole life. I absolutley love it here! There's no other school i would rather go to. I have so many friends and very few enemy's. The kids at Mattawan all have their own pesonality. Most of my teachers i have had were probably the best teachers ever. The school lunches are ok but i still like them. They have amazing staff that help you all the time. We have a huge band! Mattawan is ranked one of the best in the nation. To me the high school is a little small but im pretty sure they are going to stat vuiling a new one. When I hae kids they are deffinatly going to Mattawan! I love Mattawan and I personally think it's better than most schools in the state!

I attended Mattawan as a Junior in high school and absolutely hated it. Not only were most the students very unfriendly and clicky coaches treated me like i was dirt because i came from a smaller school it was very sad how they played favorites. I have never felt so unwelcome in my entire life. On a lighter note the education was great probably the only reason i made it through the school year. I returned back to my old school for my senior year and couldn't have been happier with my decision... If you plan on starting your child here from the get go it would probably help them get through but I would not recommend transferring to this school.

I love it here. I've gotten a great education and it has really prepared me for college. I've gone to Mattawan Consolidated Schools my whole life and it's been an amazing place to grow up.

Mattawan is a great school which has received high marks in all categories art sports and academics. Its arts programs are one of the many things that Mattawan is inernationally recognized for the band and chours programs are unmatched. Mattawan is known for its exceptional softball team which has been ranked best in the nation they met the president last year. Mattawan's soccer programs are also well above average and usually finish within the top three in the state. Mattawan's lacrosse program is exceptional all around. The academics make Mattawan in the top ten schools in the country. The school is a safe clean and friendly learning enviornment. I wouldn't go to any other school in the state because what Mattawan has is not found anywhere else. Mattawan is an easy place to make friends because of its friendly students. And the teachers really do care and want you to succeed.

All of these reviews are from parents speaking on behalf of their children and much of what they are saying is absolutely true. Mattawan does have an excellent band program and high educational standard. However from a student's point of view the school is really sub-par. I have no problem with the administrators themselves but there's obviously a money sectioning problem. While our band (which does not affect the students' future life and therefore should not be the school's priority) receives a vast budget students are forced to take online courses for things that they should not have to and are sometimes not able to complete this work satisfactorily due to the fact that paper and toner are often at a shortage. I like a lot of the teachers but there are some (two come to mind) that would be fired at any other school and ruined my entire stay.

I graduated in 08' awesome school and it helped prepare me for college in a way I can't explain. I am now an Aviation Administration Major and a Air Force ROTC major and it has gotten me through some times. Thank you Mattawan you are an inspiration to me and so many others.

Tiny facilities too few teachers too low budget horrible students.

This school must have gotten worse since the alumni were there because I've yet to notice many of the positive aspects of the school. In my one year here I've experienced rude teachers that fail to understand people who's personalities are different from theirs rude students and a mediocre administration that feels as if they're attempting to play catch up. While I would go deeper into these points I shall hold off a final opinion until I become a junior and perhaps change but as of now this school isn't looking to be as good as it lets on. On the plus side the music program's great. It's a bit too intense for those who aren't completely dedicated towards band so unless band's a large part of your child's life I'd recommend they not take it as the program's only for those willing to invest most of their spare time into it.

I am a Mattawan alumni from 1981 with four children currently attending Mattawan from K through 12. I have found that Mattawan has been consistent in being proactive about meeting goals and standards for education. I have found the Early Elementary to be run by an excellent principal staff and teachers all commited to excellence in education for children of this age group. These educators truly love what they do and it shows. I can provide nothing but positive feedback an know that when I send my children out each day they are well attended and educated. The current economy affects our schools and its programs and I think it is incumbent upon us as parents to step up to the plate and volunteer our time however that is possible to enhance the existing programs. Our children are the future of tomorrow.

Mattawan is an excellent school. I have children in both 10th and 7th grade both in band. The music program at Mattawan is by far the best in the entire area. Although they do not have orchestra the band and choir programs are first class. The band has won numerous awards such as 'Grand Champion' for their marching band and consistent high marks at contests. We are enjoying an excellent well rounded educational experience in Mattawan.

Mattawan was the best school for my son. He excelled in all academic areas by taking advantage of the AP and Honors classes available. I can't say enough good things about the instrumental music program. Mattawan did a great job of preparing him for the rigors of the University of Michigan.
