Pennsylvania System of State Assessments (PSSA)

In 2011-2012 Pennsylvania used the Pennsylvania System of State Assessments (PSSA) to test students in grades 3 through 8 and 11 in math and reading, in grades 5, 8 and 11 in writing, and in grades 4, 8 and 11 in science. The results for reading, writing and math are displayed on GreatSchools profiles. The PSSA is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Pennsylvania. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the test.

Teachers and staff are terrific! My child was able to take college credit courses and I felt he was well prepared for his future. The school has gone through a few changes in adminstration over the last few years. The new Superintendent has vision and the school is making great strides.

Responding to a post in 2008 nothing has changed except an increase in violence. They still only care about the athletics program and not actual education. It is a school in a sad state of disarray. Why anyone would choose this school district is beyond me.

People have their own opinions about steel valley high school. some say its a dirty school. its really not. You can not say that the students here don't get education because of the teachers. It's obviously because of her own inability to understand. This school is honestly a great school. Some things may take time to progress to get better. Steel Valley strives for the best in every student. If this school was not a really good school I would not have been here for almost 11 years.

Steel Valley High School is an excellent school with a rigorous curriculum and a reputation for excellence - in a solid middle class community. They have an abundance of modern technology such as whiteboards laptops projectors and computer labs and it is integrated into most of the classes. The administration supports the staff and students and promotes a culture of success. Students are valued and due to small class sizes receive personalized attention. Parents are welcomed and involved and student have a large choice of athletics and co-curricular activities. Steel Valley is great school for students to prepare for the workforce or college and students easily can compete with other local high school students academically socially and athletically. I love Steel Valley High School and all it has to offer my children.

I love this school. It's not the biggest or most highly funded but I take great pride in going here and I get a good education.

I have a daughter who attends this school. I am so dissatisfied with the quality of education she is receiving. Taxes are so high in Munhall and we do not see any proof that our money goes to improvements in the school. We don't even have bus transportation. The school health office is a disgrace. The nurse is too busy with clerical work that she can't give the time and attention to our children that she requires. The school is too involved with improvements to the athletics department and not in the education of the children.

Steel Valley High School continuously strives to offer rigorous academically-rich curriculum competing well with the more affluent communities of the south hills. Test scores are improving each school year many students continue their post-secondary education at local colleges and institutions and a variety of challenging AP courses are offered. There are many extra-curricular offerings in sports music clubs etc. The school continues to enhance and upgrade its facilities with a new middle school gymnasium renovated auditorium and new electronic entrance sign for 2007. With increased revenue from The Waterfront renovation of older and historical homes in the community building of new homes and a reasonable millage rate the district is showing and will continue to show remarkable improvement! Steel Valley students get a solid education and are well-prepared for a 21st century technology-rich workforce.

Steel Valley provides the opportunity for all children to achieve academically and socially. They have a quality staff. Parent and community involvement needs to be stronger but those who are involved do a wonderful job keeping the school a priority.

Steel Valley's educational program is sincerly lacking any substance. The music program lacks but only because of lack of student maturity and interest. However the sporting program thrives due to much money and effort put into keeping these students safe from being suspended or punished as well as much money being spent on the football field instead of educational items. there is unlimited access to mulitiple computer labs however the library is in desperate need of an update. You have to want to do well and some times even that is not enough.

I beleave that the teachers should pay more attention to what goes on in the classroom they should keep a good eye out for bullying that goes around in the classroom and do something about it unlike some teachers that let it go through one ear and out the other stuff like that should not be left alone because stuff like bullying can cause alot of problems with the kid that is being picked on. I feel that they should have more activities for the students like mabe track a lacross team or make up some activities. They need a better resolution on bullying and come up with a better plan to keep the school a bully free zone.
