The SOL tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Virginia. The goal is for all students to pass the tests.

2014 - this school still has Art education and Computer class only offered to the students half of the year! Incredible! These students are missing out - getting further and further behind. The grading scale is not what others around us have - the 10 point scale. In Virginia Beach the elementary schools aren't even on a letter based grading scale. I was told by a teacher starting now - February - the rest of the school year will be SOL review....4 months of that! These poor kids! These poor teachers!

I can't say enough good things about this school. Good class sizes excellent teachers and caring staff. If you are considering this school I highly encourage a visit. I'm not sure where some commenters are getting low tests scores from? NKES has won several awards and has done well on testing.

The one word that best describes this school is NIGHTMARE. I would work two jobs so I DO NOT have to send my children there. If you have to settle on a below par school then this is the school for you. The staff are rude uncaring and unprofessional . New Kent Elementary school is a poorly ran school with poor test results to prove it. Research other options before having to settle for this lazy educational system. The staff is completely burned out and not at all role models for the young children. The principal is a know-it-all and not interested in your input. I get the sense his lethargic support staff is much more important to him than his young students.

The problem this school and every school in the school district has is with the "management" so to speak. The superintendent Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Director of Instructional Technology Testing and Accountability have all been given a job that has proven to be too much for them to handle. Frivolous unfocused spending and no direct attention to the impact on students has deeply effected the ability for these schools in the district to offer the best education to their students. This can be seen be falling test scores especially in reading content areas. The school board needs to reevaluate and get back to focusing on the needs of the students instead of the wants of their directors.

I have mixed feelings about New Kent Elementary. The office staff is so helpful and the PTO is fantastic. However important aspect the teachers are a "mixed bag". A few are great most just okay and a few are awful! It is also really distressing that even though you are not allowed to request teachers many people do and the same people continually get the "best" teachers. Unfortunately many kids suffer academically because of this. All children should have great teachers...there are more poor teachers here than great ones.

I have to give NKES an A+ at least in Rainbow house. My son has been there since he was 2 1/2 and he's now 5 (I held him back from K-5 because of speech). His teacher and the teacher's aid were wonderful the past few years. So far this year is going great too! I had a very close relationship with his last teacher. She kept me up to date on everything & you could tell that she loved him and her job. He does still have some issues with his speech however he's come a long way. I was a student that attended New Kent Schools & I have to tell you they have certainly come a LONG way. Reading was a problem with lots of kids I went to school with. Parents learning starts at home and if your unhappy you need to make your voice heard.

I have mixed feelings about New Kent Schools. We have two children attending this countie's school system. One is nine and at the New Kent Elementary School. The other is 12 and is at the Middle School. I feel that my middle school child has missed out alot on his reading skills. My elementary age child has done much better. As with all schools parent involvement is a must. You must know where your child's level is and be there at homework time. It takes all I can do in the evenings to get everything done. I am a working mother of two and am exhaulsted but it's my responsibilty to keep on track. However; the bus situation improved greatly 2007. I must say that 2006 and the years before were completely out of control with the transportation department. Finally they are not exposing the younger ones to things.

The 07-08 school year was the first for my children. They loved the school their teachers. The teachers counselors and both principals managed to know my children as individuals often calling them out by their names asking them how their day was and even taking the time to talk to me as I picked them up at the end of the day to me on anything he may have seen my kids doing right or wrong. I never once saw my childrens principal and have no idea what the vice prinicpal looked like at my childrens last school. NKE gave me a since of warmth and caring for our first year experience.

My daughter was switched last year from George Watkins to NKE because of the border change. NKE was excellent. The teachers were great and worked with me when I had questions about my daughters progress. My other daughter will be starting K this year and I look forward to another great year. I only wish they would have open house in the evening.

This is a small school out in the country with a lot of character. Very welcoming and everybody knows your name. New Kent has wonderful teachers and staff members and has a wonderful special needs department. I feel I have a voice at this school and see so much potential here. I love New Kent Elementary!

I have 2 children in this school and I am there each school day picking up my kids. There teachers we have encountered are very loving and care about the children's education. Though from the outside looking in there are areas of the school that need improvement as far as organization and spacial concerns I feel very pleased with the education my children are getting. the general feeling in the school is nurturing the individual student and those strengths FAR outweigh the sometimes 'untidy' areas that can be found in several areas of the school.

I would not recommend this school to anyone. My children have attended this school for two years and will not attend next year.I volunteer in my kids classes and attend all functions I know first hand how disrespectful the principal vice principal and teachers can be.

My daughter had a great teacher this year but last year was terrible. The administration was unhelpful and disrespectful. I found the staff to be unprofesional and poor quality. This year's teacher was amazing and made a world of difference for my daughter but I am scared of next year.

This school was inadequate at recognizing learning disabilitites especially when it comes to reading. Very few of the teachers have their Masters degrees and are stagnant in their teaching approaches. The current principal is to set in his ways since he has been there for over 30 years. It's time for some badly needed changes that will benefit the children of our community. I have never seen a school with a lack of parental involvement. They show up for anything that is free like candy given out for Fall Festival but could care less about the education their children are receiving. This is still a small school which could be so great but due to lack of leadership lack of motivated teachers and no parental involvement the children are getting a poor education.

His k & 1st grade teachers were great. The school allows you to choose teachers i will take the time to talk to other parents about the teachers and choose for my next 2 children.
