New York State Assessments (NYSA)

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. See http://www.engageny.org/sites/default/files/resource/attachments/test_score_release_letter_to_parents.pdf from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes. In 2013-2014 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math, and in grades 4 and 8 in Science. At present 2013-14 results are available only for English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to mee

School administrators needs to be effective communicators. There is a disconnect in communication from administrators towards parents about practices within the school.

Me and both my kids like this school. The principal and most of the teachers are very good. I can't complain. When I had any question I could go to parent coordinator. She is very friendly and helpful. Although there is a junior high school in the same building they never interact (they don't share the same floors lunchrooms and go to the field at different time) so don't worry about it.

This school is getting worse. Some teachers are better than others but the educational and academic levels are awful. Including scores for the recent common core test scores. The environment is a jungle! There is a junior night school in the building where kids are running wild and crazy. Everyday when I pick up my daughter from school all I see is bunch of crazy junior high kids cursing and yellin. It's an awful. Stay away. I can't wait for my daughter to finish the grade and get out.

Hi! My daughter is currently a 5th grader in the gifted and talented program at PS 197 and I must say that we have truly enjoyed her time there. The teachers are wonderful the staff is friendly and the curriculum is challenging. The school is wonderfully diverse and make every effort to accommodate those that speak english as a second language. I would recommend this school to anyone looking to have their child's educational career begin in a place where the student is the priority.

The school was fine 5 years ago the classes became very poor and very weak kids will need a lot of help in order to be competive with other schools. The principal pretend to be helpful but she is not when you ask for some specific request forget about it there will be always a NOT even when you didn't finish asking for your request. It is very sad and disappointed because the school is located in a very nice neighborhood so the school should be in high standards and unfortunately there is not other choice around and with this terrible recession no way to afford a private school which is very sad because our kids deserve better education

I love this school its the best thing next to white bread. My both boys are very happy here. They treat my children with love respect and would do anything for them through out the day. Mrs. Nicoletti Principal and Ms Williams A.P. are the most caring individuals for there children. The staff the teachers and security in the school are positive roll models in everyway. When my children are at school I have no worries I know they are being treated well.

I have 2 kids in this school. I overaly happy with school staff teachers principal and parent coordinator- everybody are very helpfull . My son's pre-K teacher is just great- recomend to everyone- Mrs Slavutskaya and her assistant Mrs Lazaro- both very caring and realy love their pupils. On the other hand my daughter's teacher is unprofessional both academicaly and as a caregiver.

Now that a very difficult principal retired the atmosphere at this once coveted yet still decent school is calmer and more relaxed. The teachers for the most part are a devoted lot but many kudos should go to the school based support team which consists of counselors and therapists of the highest caliber.

This school is excellent in terms of its emphasis on reading. It also puts an emphasis on attendance as a part of overall education experience which is essential to the child advancement and knowledge. The school has an extensive amount of workshops which are available for children of all grades. Parent involvement is always encouraged.

Amazing teachers for Pre-K and K classes. Very disappointed otherwise.

The children are wonderful but some of the staff leave something to be desired. They may be good to the students but I feel they don't treat each other in a professional manner and that is not good for morale. Certain staff members treat substitute teachers like dirt and that needn't be.
