New York State Assessments (NYSA)

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new standards for proficiency in these subjects are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change. See http://www.engageny.org/sites/default/files/resource/attachments/test_score_release_letter_to_parents.pdf from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes. In 2013-2014 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math, and in grades 4 and 8 in Science. At present 2013-14 results are available only for English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to mee

This school is terrible! The NYC public school system should stop catering to foreigners and start charging foreigners for ESL classes. My child knows English it should not be tax payer responsibility to pay for some foreigners child to speak English! Also the principal here is unorganized. The people who run the Pta here are snobs! Plus my child's teacher accused my daughter of losing a book that she returned to the teacher!

I have not experience other elementary school. However I am very happy and proud of my sons progress at PS 31. It's a wonderful school. We have excellent caring teachers here who are very dedicate on their work. My boys are happy and enjoying school. PS 31 not only is an excellent school for academic. Each year every class put together a show on stage from K-5. Plus we have PS 31 recitals every month where students have a chance to shine their writing music and other talents in front of a small audience. The parents here are helpful and friendly too. I am please with all the things that are offered to my sons at PS 31.

P.S.31 is a real child friendly environment with a staff that is nurturing for the students.

There is nothing wrong with this School or staff The Principal and support staff have addressed and resolved any and all issues brought to their attention. Should a situation or problem occur the Principal is always available and will take the time to sit down with you and discuss your concerns. She is truly dedicated and will do whatever it takes to comfort you and your child. She sees to it that our children come first and foremost when additional help and/or resources are needed. This is our fourth year at PS 31Q if there were any serious issues concerns or problems do you think that we would keep both of our children in this School? This School has been recognized for providing quality Education that our children desparately need to move on in this complex world.

This is the first year of myson in this school and it has a lot of problems. They will not listen to the student and parents if there are complaints. The school always blames my son if there's a problem.

It is a good school but the class size is too big. They need to re-structure it.

My opinion of this School leadership and staff from my last one dated on 09/28/08 has not changed. They are wonderful.

This is an excellent school with a caring and nurturing staff. My child has thrived in this school and has been able to bring out the best in my child. My only complaint is the school needs a literacy coach and a stronger enrichment program which will be able to bring our children to the next level.

This is my grauding year at PS31 school.Im going to miss it because I love this school. The scholl is well oraginzed. The teachers is are good with kids I think they make school very fun. We have big shows and a chours groop and this year we are doing a show called Guys and Dolls. The BIG shows are always at the end of the yaer but you fell like your at a brodway show. If you go here you won't to leave P.S31.

My child felt at home in this school. The close-knit community feeling supplied by the teachers we came in contact with made my child want to please. She put extra effort into her work because of the excitement and encouragement from the teachers. The afterschool programs are wonderful and varied giving children of all ages interesting and fun new subjects or activities in which to excel. After six years in this school it was hard to say goodbye. How often do children say they had FUN in school? PS 31 in Bayside nurtures a child's desire to learn by engaging the whole child. The teachers are friendly yet firm. The curriculum thorough yet interesting. The school is like home away from home and we will miss it as we move on to middle school.

Great school teachers are very knowledgeable and interactive with the children. The school seems to be getting a bit crowded because of the new neighborhood. But the school has stayed strong.
