California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

Cypress is a good school if your child has a good teacher. The principal is open only to certain parent's requests for particular teachers. I'm not sure why some parents get every request and others don't get any requests. Watch out if you ask that your child not be placed in a particular class they do it anyways. There are some teachers that are not good.

My children have enjoyed this school immensely. The teachers are wonderful and the parent involvement is very high. Great all around school with a fun and interactive art program and many other extracurricular activities available.

My two daughters have attended Cypress for their entire elementary education and I have been very happy with the school as a whole. We have been fortunate to have excellent teachers and the after school care is amazing. The music/art programs that have been offered are fantastic and so much better than anything we had in LAUSD. Nothing is perfect but Cypress has been great!

My son really enjoys going to Cypress. He is lucky to have a great K teacher which I think is important. Great campus too. Only thing is that it seems the lunch time for K kids is kind of short and my son usually doesn't have enough time to finish all his food.

We did not like this school. The teacher was harsh administration unconcerned and the 'enrichment' afterschool program a joke. The serious lack of communication with parents and being treated with disrespect made us take action to move our child to a better school environment.

Cypress is a GREAT!! school. My son loves going to school everyday and Ms. Valentine is one of the best pricipals in Newbury Park. They have a great system.

We had a mixed experience with this school. Some exceptional and enthusiastic teacher; and some absolutely horrible teachers coasting toward retirement. Caution to parents starting out in early grades explore your childs teacher in great detail as you may encounter teachers that will possibly impede your childs progress. Having said that I must say that the teaching in higher grades specially 3rd/4th is outstanding. The curriculum is great and the TLC just right. Leadership by the principle is weak. Simple issues are overlooked and swept under the rug to show everything is working well. Overall a good school but careful navigation required at all times.

Too many teachers and adminitrators who only care about their tenure benefits salries and pensions!

My son Loved cypress when he was in Kindergarten when he got to first grade the hours that they went to school was 90 minutes longer he is coming home from school tired and sick to his stomach... This is the best school in the district ... and I am thrilled to be sending my child there all of the teachers care and the staff is wonderful.. but they can cut back on the hours that the 1st - 5th grade attends.. and not give the children so much pressure

This is one of the highest rated schools in the district. There is much parent involment. It is probably a great school for highly academic kids. My daughter loved kidergarten there but once she got to first grade she started to hate school. There is tremedous academic presure to keep those scores high. She is having diffiulty keeping up and it is very academic with alot of homework. It might work very well for some child but my child is struggling with reading so it has been difficult. She is very creative and there are not many choices for her. There has also beena new principal every year.

This school is awesome. It is our first year at Cypress and I couldn't have asked for a better experience for my daughter. All my prayers were answered. Thanks to the PTA they have been able to provide many activites for our children. Parent involvement is excellent. We love Cypress.

Great school with active parent-teacher-staff involvement. Safe environment and good after school programs. The school implemented an increased physical education and musical program this schoolyear.

Would like to see the schools get more state funding for API scores as well as other things.

Great school! A principal who really cares about the academic level his kids are at. Wonderful teachers who are caring giving and always in touch with the parents. Fabulous parent involvement. These kids are very lucky.
