California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

Our family loves Loma Verde! That is why we are so sad to be moving away. I had my doubts about LV when my son was about to start kindergarten. I was told by parents (who were note LV parents) about the school not being good enough. I took a tour and also toured other schools and I was impressed with LV and what it had to offer. Plus the principal was clearly engaged with the students and faculty and it was clear that she really cared about the school. Two years later we are still here. Ms. Kraft and Ms. Mcmorrow are amazing teachers! Ive never heard a parent complain about their child's teacher. The other great thing about the school is the parent involvement. Parents chip in any way they can. Whether its helping the students get out of the car in the mornings volunteering in the classroom or school fundraisers. The PTA does a great job of supporting the school's needs too. We can't say enough good things about this school!

Loma Verde is a tremendous school both in academics and culture. Hundreds of families will tell you just how great it is. The children leave here enriched and well prepared for the next level of schooling. The school culture is fantastic. Students have been noted by the District as being better prepared due to the excellent academic program. Loma Verde is widely considered one of the best schools around.

Fabulous Principal with a wonderful understanding of the needs of her diverse school which serves everyone including children with disabilities and non english families. This little school manages to serve breakfast to all find fresh vegetable for those who need great teachers who care about the kids and innovative methods to enrich everyone.

Loma Verde is an incredible school. Rigorous academics welcoming and nurturing environment with highly qualified and experienced teaching staff. The Principal was awarded "principal of the year" in Marin County for good reason. The culture has produced amazing results and progress. Some of the best scores in the state when sub groups are compared. The below comment about a kid "getting lost in 3 months" sounds like sour grapes. 12 weeks? No way. The partnerships that are formed in the classroom foster a progressive and well developed curriculum with defined results. These are evident in the API progress being made. But Loma Verde goes beyond testing and develops the whole child with Gardening Track Music Technology and other enrichment programs. You will be hard pressed to find a more well rounded elementary education (public or private) in Marin Cty.

We love our neighborhood school. We have 3 kids there all of them have excellent teachers and have thrived academically. The principal is outstanding.

My kids were getting lost in the system here....I moved them after 3 months. They are thriving now.....This school might be "good" but only for some people.

We love this school. The principle has had such a big impact on the school and our community. We have had four teachers so far and feel that not only are our children are getting all needs met but they are always being challenged.

Even after reviewing the "criteria" greatschools.net uses to review and make their ratings it is unclear to me why LV doesn't have a higher rating. Using API results the state gives LV an "8" but the more important ranking is the "similar schools" ranking by the state giving LV a "10" ranking - one of only two schools in Marin County to receive a "10" (the other is in Southern Marin). These are more accurate rating as they take into account the diversity our school is lucky to have and shows that our students score well when compared to students with the same socio-economic demographic and to schools with a similar make-up. This site is confusing to new parents looking up schools so if test scores are the main marker you use to evaluate a school's potential I would urge you to go the NUSD offices and get the scores comparing students of the same socio-economic status. You will find that basically if a student has college-educated parents and does not qualify for Free/Reduced lunch the student will typically score over 900 regardless of what school they attend. The district has the numbers to break this down as the CDE website does not do this.

I have two children at LV and they are both excelling. We are lucky to have not only a great principal Eileen Smith great teachers and dedicated parents but also many unique enrichment programs. We were voted "the greenest" school in Marin. We have both accelerated learning classes as well as intervention classes. We are very proud of our school and are working hard everyday to make it even better Support your local school..

I am so excited that our school just received a "10" similar school rank. We are one of two schools in Novato to receive this rank. Yippee!
