California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

Howard Elementary is a great school for both regular education students and students with special needs. It is a clean safe campus and the principal is always around making sure things are running smoothly. She is always available to speak with you. The staff is friendly yet firm when it comes to making sure the students are always following school rules. My son has special needs and all too often it can be easy to exclude him however the school and staff at Howard know him by name and make sure he is always included. The special education teacher my son has is amazing. Works hard to make sure my son is challenged and deals well with my son s challenges. The school is not perfect but in today s economy and with all the budgetary challenges ALL schools face Howard does its best.

Howard is a very small school with a huge campus that is surrounded by the Oakland Foothills. Howard Elementary used to be a great school but has tremendously declined after years of losing great principals. Howard has the benefit of having a few seasoned veterans for teachers. But lacks overall leadership. The PTA is a joke. And now students are suffering with 3rd and 4th grade mixed classes. 4th and 5th grade mixed classes. And a Kindergarten room with almost 30 kids. Is this for real??? Howard could be a great school but it isnt.
