California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

HBES is a school where all the teachers want to teach and all the families want their kids to go there. The teachers are long time experienced and excellent teachers. Their experience provides students with a solid and reliable education yet the enthusiasm has not wained. The staff is very professional.

This used to be a great school but budget cuts transfer students overwhelmed teachers and gossipy parents have taken it's toll on this school. The school seems to only teach what will be on the state tests. And some teachers like Ms. Kildee should not be teaching kids period. My child lost an entire year to Ms. Kildee he is so behind because she didn't care or teach! The PTA parents seem to rule this school in fact there are a couple parents who come to school every day to both lunch and to "help" in the classroom and tell all the kids what to do then gossip about what other kids are doing wrong. I can't believe this school allows these parents to control so much. Many kids I have know who have graduation from HBS were not prepared for middle school even GATE students have been behind going to middle school. It's sad because this school used to be a great neighborhood school.

Hollywood Beach School. My son just graduated from HBS after 7 years and we are so sad to say goodbye. HBS cares about their kids as if they were their own! The teaches are TOP notch and I feel my son is ready for the challenges of Middle School! Thank you HBS for nurturing the academic development of my child.

I have found the principal to be very naive. The secretary uncaring inadequate uncooperative gossipy and two faced. She really needs to retire. She doesn't seem to like her job or care about children's feelings whatsoever. Move along. Ya the tests scores are high if that's all you care about. How about teaching values. Help one another and caring about others? This school is SO over-rated. Teachers have favorites. Yard duty ladies do t watch the kids well at all. Just gossip during their shifts. I would not recommend this school is you want your child to become a loving caring human being. They have no feelings whatsoever.

It was another great year at Hollywood Beach School. They have great teachers and principal. My daughter is doing well academically and loves her school.

My son just finished his first year at Hollywood Beach. He was in 4th grade and i have to say this school was excellent. He transferred from Hathaway. I like the fact that his 4th grade class was a mix of 4th and 5th. His teacher was very nice and you could tell she really cared. I do wish that they would have more homework. I believe that it is the best elementary school in Oxnard.

The best school in this area. We were fortunate enough to be able to transfer here since the other schools didn't have high test scores for the NCLB act. Everyone here is nice and supportive. They always answer questions and care about the students. We also don't have to worry about spanish speaking students taking time away from kids who actually speak English. All the other schools cater to the spanish speaking kids and it's wrong. I wish all schools were like Hollywood Beach.

Not supportive? I called the school district superintendent and he told me the same thing...he said that there is no hope and the school gets no funding. I emailed the Govenor and he said that only the CA dept of Education can change the school and i also called the onsite child care at Pierpont and he told me that he asked to go into Hollywood beach but they will not work with him without parents getting involved and I was the only parent that would make the change. I did not ask for free childcare I asked they offer childcare so I can pay. I am not low income and my child was a GATE student all A's and his teacher told me that she felt the school didnt even offer anything for the child. So perhaps someone is not realizing what a good school should be and should offer.

My son went to Beach for 5th and 6th grade and is now in the 8th at a middle school in Ventura. Beach is a good sanctuary from the terrible Hueneme and Oxnard social biasis but kids are not prepared with adequate skills once they leave. Kids are over-nurtured and not able to self direct and have self discipline to navigate the larger middle school once they leave. Study skills organization and accountability for academic performance should be much stronger.

Hollywood Beach is the best elementary school in Oxnard. I have 1 who went to Beach since 2nd grade-he is now in High School and I have one currently there in second. It is small but the teachers and admin are the best.

We are very happy with the quality of this school. We moved from one side of the district into Hollywood Beach territory and inadvertently discovered this wonderful place. My son is thriving here under excellent teachers and staff. I grew up in Pasadena when California schools were some of the best in the nation and this school reminds me of the opportunities that were available to me back then.

I have three children at this school and it is totally great! We actually moved my oldest from a private school because this one was so much better (way higher standardized test scores). Great teachers great facilities and great use of technology at all levels. My kindergartener has 12 computers in his class that they all use daily. My older two have computer lab every day and they have self-paced programs that allow the kids to work ahead. They also have a full up band starting at fourth grade. I only wish every school were this great.

My son is in his second year at Hollywood Beach. The school is fantastic. The teachers are committed caring and have a great focus on education for all students.

Nice small community school but seems to be lacking in art and physical education type activities.

Our child attended first grade here and we were generally unimpressed. The teacher was regularly late for class and the children had to wait outside in the weather for her to arrive. The other parents also had an anti-military bias that was pervassive and the faculty was dismissive and unapologetic. We eventually pulled our child out are are currently homeschooling. Not recommended.

Our daughter started kindergarten and already knew how to read. They tailored to her needs and still advanced her education. The personal attention given to each student is unmatched anywhere. We have never been dissatisfied with sending her to this school.

We are glad that our son goes to this schools. Parents involvement is great. Principal and teachers are excellent. Students receive individual attention.

I have a grandson that attends Hollywood Beach School and it's a wonderful and exciting way to bring knowledge to our young people. The teacher's and staff are exceptional. I like the way they will go out of their way to help their students achieve their goals. No one student is different from one another. I see their goal as a wonderful experience for the student to learn and like to learn by going to school making it a pleasant and wonderful experience.

My daughter has only been attending this school for 6 months and she fit right in after only a couple of days. I am very impressed this is an awesome school great principal incredibley dedicated teachers and friendly office staff. My daughter is excited about going to school (there is a God)! She also loves reading and is always searching for new books to read before she felt it was a punishment that needed to be avoided. I have even seen her turn off the playstation to curl up with a new book now that is a true miracle and a credit to her teacher. So why can't they have a decent junior high and high school to follow this amazing elementary?
