California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

Our son is in kindergarten and so far things have been great! We love his teacher and she's very in tune with the kids. I think the reason why we are having a good experience so far is because we are VERY involved with the happenings there. We go to all the functions and meetings as well as make sure to routinely speak with our son's teacher. I think this is SO important and it's very lacking nowadays. We do not have much $ but we still make sure to donate whenever we can in school supplies. It's sad but most of the parents of the children in our son's class weren't aware of the changes coming up at the school. This information was provided at a parent meeting ( a call was made to the homes) and honestly maybe 8 parents showed up. I think with more parent involvement this school can excel!

can someone give me a feedback i see alot of bad reviews from a couple of years back how is the school now? im planning to move to a area close by and according to where i will be living this is the closest by is it better now?

The school has its issues I rate it two stars because of the overcrowded capacity teachers are dealing with up to 32 students per class many of which are unruly and their hands are tied in ways to deal with them. The office staff has not changed they are still unprofessional which is sad because they are the first impression parents get of the school. I have heard of bullying going on and no effort is being made to address it. a bunch of responsibility shifting. My son is still there only because it is close to my house that has been the only benefit of Cottonwood

I Have my daugther in first grade and I love the School ...Thachers and Principal too..I believe is a great school.

I have had my kids in this school for 3 years and finally pulled them out. The office is rude and the teachers seem so stressed out. The school is so over crowded that lunch time is rushed through and discipline problems are high. A lot of changes need to take place before I ever put my kids back.

Attention parents if you have read some bad comments about Cottonwood the only thing that is true is the bad principal. The teachers are wonderful and they try to put this school in a better place. The good news is that we got a new principal Mrs.Sour. She is very sweet. She is always working hard and trying to make this school a better place. As she always says TOGETHER WE CAN!

This is the worst school my son has ever attended! We have lived in three states and attended four different school districts and I have to say that Cottonwood is horrible. I would never send my child back to this school.

i am happy overall with my daughers education here. she has great scores on her tests and she is reading and writing at her level and sometimes above compared to east side school districts this school has a better academic scores if the parents work with their children too then the important thing is that your child gets a good education. and my daughter is doing well so far. i will continue to do my part and hope

Mrs. Peck that's the evil pricipal who screams at these defenseless children suspends kids for the smallest infraction and you wouldn't believe what she attempt to do to some parents. I hope her boss reds this. Keep your children OUT of this school at any cost! I know what I'm talking about!

I am very dissapointed with cottonwood. Although my son like his teacher I really have nothing else positive to say about the school. The office staff has been very rude and short with me and my wife evertime we have had to deal with them. Pick up and drop off is honestly a joke there is only one way in and one way out of the parking lot. Takes up to 20 minutes sometimes to pick up my child. If you are thinking about your child going here look around Quartz Hill elementary is right down the street and is a much better school.

My Grandson has gone to Cottonwood since Kindergarten (he's in 4th this year) and if it weren't for his good circle of friends I would have really tried hard to get him transferred to a private school. I hear friends talking about activities at their children's school and realize how little Cottonwood does for the kids. Not much recogntion for good citizenship or academics. Principal seems very detatched and seems to only speak when she scolding the kids. She gives a lot of negative feedback. I hope things improve next year!

YES the office is rude! I am a parent but treated like a disobedient student! There is the typical overcrowding and if I didn't sit with my child and be very involved in his homework and do volunteer work in the class he would become one of the invisible kids that I see. It's better than many Palmdale district schools but it needs improvement. The class sizes are large.

I have two kids currently at this school and this is our third year.I have just loved all the teachers!I do think there is a huge problem in the office rude rude and rude. Things really need to change.. Mrs.Peck please do something about the office I know alot of parents are unhappy and its really giving us a bad rep. We do need more extracurricular activities we used to have chess...What happened? We really do not have anything for our kids!

My two children have attended Cottonwood for the past three years. A couple of times had to deal with the Principal and she was short not supportive or understanding. My child was placed on a room whit two teachers on a job-share assignment and I felt they didn't communicate well enough. I also think that all the 'good teachers' are slowly been move to Esperanza leaving Cottonwood with very few experienced teachers.

I have two kids in Cottonwood and I think its a great school the teachers are on top of stuff and if I ever had any questions or concerns they were quick to get back to me. The principle was very helpful and prompt with problem solving. I do agree on the office staff... they are rude and short with many people. And the recess Aids don't pay attention as much as they should and a lot of trouble makers get away with a lot of mishaps on the yard. But the teachers and principle are on the ball with academics. My children have been there 3 years and they are advanced in there classes!

My daughter attended Cottonwood for 4 years. She did have wonderful caring teachers although much of the homework sent home was 'busy work' and I saw a definite lack in special projects/reports this year. Their chorale program was a joke however. Ridiculous songs taught by volunteers. There seems to be a low level of parent participation. I often did not receive school newsletters because the teacher would neglect to hand them out. The staff is unfriendly. The principal is difficult to deal with and not available to parents. There is no willingness to work as a team for the benefit of the students. I am very unhappy with this school. I would not choose to send my daughter to Cottonwood given the choice. She has since changed schools.

As a second-year parent of a student at Cottonwood I must say that I have been impressed with the individual attention given to my child by both faculty and staff. What impresses me is the belief that my child is not the exception in that regard. Special resource programs designed to strengthen academic areas identified through individual testing as needing additional reinforcement are promptly put into place. The reciprocal communication between the school and parents is commendable. My child and I walk to school most mornings and the provisions made to ensure the safety of the students before and after they arrive on campus are great! Cottonwood is an example of tax dollars well invested.

My son is a First-Grade student in Mrs. Chang's class. So far I am impressed with his teacher. She seems excited about teaching the kids and has at least 11 years of experience. My son's teacher last year was Mrs. Stichman...another excellent teacher! So far Cottonwood has made me a very happy parent! My only concern is in the morning my son would be with 6th graders without very much supervision. I may just be a worrier but I stay until his teacher opens her door just in case.

My son came from another local school district to cottonwood just as they were getting ready for winter break. When he got in class in january i was pleased to find that the children in the class were all a bit ahead of him. Although he was tops in math mrs. Chang's 1st grade class was ahead of what he'd been learning! He thrived took on his own responsibility to catch up and he did! He eneded the school year 2006 with all 'e's and two s+'s. Terrific for my son who 'used' to come home from a school saying he was bored. I rate an a here! I hope cottonwood could get a better library but we are very happy.
