I am a student graduating from Surfside this year. Surfside is the worst school I have ever attended. However I have met some great teachers at Surfside that truly care about their students. Sadly they do not make up for the rest of the staff at Surfside who don't care about their students at all. I would strongly urge anyone thinking of going to Surfside to stay as far away from that school as possible.

I am in fifth grade; today I took a tour of Surfside Middle School because I am going there for 6th grade. When I first walked on campus I was amazed by the beautiful place I was in. Honestly the students and staff at the school seemed like the kindest people ever and I can't wait to join Surfside and become a shark! The students introduced us to all the awesome clubs they had there and the principal introduced us to herself and the other staff members. We went through the 6th 7th and 8th grade halls. This school seems very organized and amazing I also love the actresses and actors and band members at the school. The band welcomed us at the front of the school with a song when we first arrived it was truly beautiful. They put on a sneak peak of a play they're doing of Aladdin; I loved it. This school is very neat and clean and also seems to have wonderful people in it. I totally cannot wait to join this amazing school. -A soon to be student

As an 'Alumni' of this school i have had first hand experience to the bullying teachers administration and EVERYTHING. I will do my best to WARN parents away from this pit. 1. Teachers I've only had one experience with a teacher that has actually changed my as a person. Mark Douglas he teaches Geography US History and Creative Writing. He's cool young and he UNDERSTANDS that not all students learn the same way. He uses a combination of fun educational videos worksheets and lectures to fully engross you with knowledge. I graduated SSMS 2 years ago and we still keep in contact. I obviously haven't taken every class in the whole school but i've heard from many friends that Mr Holmes the band teacher has been the most influential person in their lives. 2. Bullies Yes parents the year is 2014 and bullying is very much still around today but not the way that you remember it. Kids dont give others wedgies. Instead they'll call others 'faggots' 'losers' 'nerds'. They'll trip push or knock you down. Your kids swear. I know it's not something you want to hear but EVERY kid in ANY school nowadays (elem. schools are exempt...for now) swears exponentially. ITS JUST 'COOL'

My daughter chose to go to Surfside for her 8th grade year. It is by far the worst school my ever daughter has ever attended. The teachers and staff do not put the students first. There are some teachers that will even go as far as blaming the students for their lack of teaching/planning skills.

We moved to Panama City Beach last year and enrolled our child at Surfside. This school has been an incredible experience for him. He doesn't play sports and isn't in band so we thought he may have a hard time getting involved. We were wrong. He joined one of the service clubs Kiwanis I think and got involved there. They also have a Leo Club and a Beta Club. His teachers do a lot of small group work which helped him get to know a lot of his classmates. I thought it was really nice that the first week of school his teacher made it a point to find other kids to go to lunch with him and introduce him around. Academically they are an A school. He did really well on the state's standardized test this year and his classes seem challenging. He's really excited for school to start in a couple of weeks. I would recommend this school to any parent coming to PCB.

This school is great! I volunteer at Surfside on several occasions. Sure there are issues with children getting in trouble (as there are in all middle schools in the country) but this school has Zero tolerance for bad behavior. I have seen 4 students get into trouble this year and they were immediately EXPELLED!! The only bad remarks I have heard from parents have been from the parents who were picking up their children who had caused the trouble. My child has seen none of this bad behavior the staff has handled each issue extremely well. The teachers are all very kind to my child as well as the other children. Students at Surfside are given the opportunity to excel in their academics with support from teachers office staff and parents. Dr. Harrell is very connected with the students she knows most (if not all of them) by name. I am proud to be a Surfside parent!

We pulled our son out of this school. Surfside Middle has been the worst experience with any school ever. The Principal is detached and seems to never be available. We had an issue with a teacher who did not return calls and the administrators(secretaries) are not professional incompitant and rude. We had a meeting with them where they did not take minutes of the meeting. When I brought it to there attention they did but left out important facts and refused to add them. I added my own comments and signed off on it. Then the administrator started editing my statement after I had signed it! A few days later they let somone else take my son home after missing the bus. They refused to allow him to call us and the person who picked him up was not on the list of approved people. The administrator told me that they were not responsible because the log where he signed in to the office to try to call us was a few minutes after "school hours" They also took cash for afundraiser and did not deliver the products and have not had any refund. NOTICE!! all the great ratings on this site are from teachers from the school or students no parents.

Fantastic school! I've been familiar with Surfside for several years. My two children attend and I am on the faculty. Surfside offers excellent academics as well as a plethora of sports electives and extra curricular activities. There is definitely a team atmosphere both inside and outside of the classroom. Teachers truly care for their students and administration and staff are top notch. It's a pleasure being a part of such an environment.

I use to go out there befor i got homeschooled my 8th grade year. The principal likes to play favorites alot. I had no problems with the teaches except one. Thers a problem when the teacher tells the class to ask a friend for help when hes the teacher. And when the principal thinks that the students are makin it up. I sure didnt see her do anything when almost every student at that schooled got pulled out to get homeschooled.

I have not received anything directly from the school or through my 8th grade daughter about extracurricular activities available or the schedule(s) of such (if any). I would also appreciate something explaining the 'wheel' system. My daughter loves spanish. How much spanish can she learn in 9 weeks? Kudos to her science teacher Ms. Patton. She sends emails returns calls promptly and provided the closest thing to a syllabus (info letter) that no other teacher bothered to provide parents. She seems to represent the best Surfside has to offer. At the other end of the scale your physical education program is a joke. C'mon ya'll. We're two months into it!

The overall level of academics at this school seems to depend on the social status of those that attend. The level of availability of extracurricular activities is far below average and not encouraged and the level of parent involvment once again seems to depend on the social status of the parent(s) and not their interest in joining. The overall school system in Bay County is not up to par as the recent FCAT scores show. I firmly believe that this is the direct result of negligence at the Superintendent's Level. Politics play a much bigger role than education at this and many Bay County schools.
