I m a former student from back in the early forties. It was a wonderful experience! The Choir went down the hall singing Carols at Christmas. We had great dedicated teachers (except for a metal shop teacher who started to choke a boy for yelling too loud.) My English teacher even came in on a Saturday to tutor when I was slipping. The Boy's Coach was also a superb swimming instructor. Often behind in homework I stayed for a lot of study halls; but it was worth it. Alas I would give the school 5 stars except that the Principle and home-room teacher had me suspended in the 10th grade -- for some reason that I don't know to this day. I was certainly not a trouble maker and got along well with the teachers. With my Dad overseas and my Mom was in poor health they couldn t address the issue. .

This school is typical of Pittsburgh Public Schools. They discipline more than teach. The leadership is unable to differentiate between offenders and defenders. They use a blanket solution...suspension which is not a true punishment for the offending students because they do not fear it. Students do not adhere to attendance policies and wander in well after the start of school. My child's academic experience is a disappointment. The guidance office and social worker are overloaded with problem students to actually give guidance.
Carrick used to be a great school but it has rocketed towards the ground. This school has taught my son nothing. The children here are out of control and most of the teachers do not particularly care for the students' individual needs. They tend to pick favorites. There are some very good teachers in this school but they are few and I assure you that most of the others do not know how to teach. The children here are immediately punished as soon as a teacher 'writes them up' without a word from the student. The school is dirty with bees often flying around the room. The kids roam the halls and most of them do not do their work. Fights break out more often than students pass tests. The only way Carrick HS has attempted to fix all of this is with more work for the kids. I am disgusted with this school and it's methods of 'teaching'.
I completely disagree with the most recent review. The teachers as a whole are very considerate and do care. The school handles thing as best as they can with the resources that they are given. The incident mentioned was a freak occurence and leaving the school was a bad decision in the firs place. The school had taken actions to insure the safety of the students and handled the situation well. Because it is a highschool there is bound to be seperation and this is not specific schools. There are a few too many altercations i must agree but the staff handles this issue as well as possible.
Parents PLEASE READ. It is of extreme importance that you hear me out. Carrick High School is one of the worst schools you could put your child in. I am currently attending. The staff at Carrick High are inconsiderate and cruel. For instance there was a recent rumor of a gun threat going around and the teachers punished children for leaving the school out of fear. I must warn you that the staff does not care about the child's grades and few out of them will give your child the necessary assistance in order for them to pass. Racism is a high ordeal. Fights break out all the time and races separate themselves in sports lunches and activities. Overall the school MUST be considered dangerous racist unacceptable and noneducational. I warn you that unless your child is extremely lucky they will be MISERABLE at this school.
I am so disappointed with the behavior of the students and teachers in this school. The teachers are apathetic and the girls need attitude adjustments. The ignorance of the parents is stunning.
I went to Carrick for my last two years of school. Although it is not the greatest schoo it has been one of the best I been to. The teachers do care and enjoy their job. But the one thing I would like to see more of is parents getting involed. Look at the the safety and discipline rate it's as low as the parent involedment. Maybe if parents were more involed there would be more scence of safety.
dangerous school teachers spend all there time disciplining and not teaching
Carrick high school is an above average school. Yes it has it problems like any other school. It is a clean building. It's entire staff-principle teachers aides custodial staff and food service workers- care and take pride in their job and building. The teaching staff that i have encountered over the past 2 years are for the most part excellent. They do care about the students and will go the extra mile to help a student get back on track or to prevent him/or her from falling behind. The help & support is not just for the honor students but for anyone that needs and accepts it. The biggest problem that i have witnessed at chs is lack of parental involvement. This is evident at all school functions from open house conference day and sporting events- such as football games at cupples stadium. . Parents must get involved.
the school is filled with bad teachers the students are misbehaved and the system of education presented in that school is very low
I was a student at Carrick High School recently (just graduated from college) and looking back on it I really enjoyed my time at Carrick. It makes me angry when people want to move out of the city for a 'better education'. (Moreover compared to my peers in college I benefited and have street smarts from the exposure to different cultures races etc.) Schools are what the students and parents make of it. Parental involvement is key and because I had great parents and supportive teachers I was able to completely benefit from the musical and honors programs at Carrick. The music program is wonderful and highly recommended.
I am currently a college bound senior at Carrick High School and I feel that CHS has a good deal of potential to be a good school but it needs A LOT of changes first. Parents faculty and teachers don't care about what happens to the students and let the children run wild through the halls and outside of school. Carrick also has two sides If you want to be there to learn they'll teach you well with honors classes but if you don't you'll get left behind. However there are a lot of great activities like the student newspaper National Honor Society and a variety sports however not enough students participate. If everybody could step things up the school could be returned to it's glory days.
