When we bought our first home, we started with a realtor who was recommended to us by our credit union. We went along as choosing her means getting some financial incentive. However, we soon realized that we weren't getting the help we needed to find a home. Bear in mind, we were first time home buyers and weren't familiar with the process. To say the least, the realtor assigned to us was unresponsive to our queries and never called to pitch an idea or provide advice. Instead, we were left with a barrage of home listings without a clue on where to start. Remember, first time home buyers are apprehensive. It helps for someone to at least call them to make that first step. We didn't get that with our first realtor. To make it short, we ditched her.
Enter Betsy, she was highly recommended to us by our landlord, who by the way was a previous realtor. Our landlord had told me how he'd interviewed numerous realtors to sell one of his properties and was impressed by how intelligent, thorough and analytic Betsy was. This was good because he has already done the hard work of doing the selection process for me. Besides, we were on a tight schedule and the mortgage rates have about reached rock bottom. We had to get a house soon and no more time to interview more people.
First item of business was to look for other mortgage lenders. Betsy recommended David Wright from Prospect Mortgage. Met with David and was impressed and to make the story short we decided to borrow from them. Later on, I realized that Betsy surrounds herself with professionals and simply learned to trust on her recommendations - from home inspectors to plumbers, etc. When you chose Betsy, you are also choosing a great team of people to work with you. A great team makes a lot of difference in your home buying experience because of the synergy that comes with it. Betsy project managed the whole thing.
From start to finish, Betsy provided a lot of home buying advice and for me it was a great learning experience. On the road, she'd teach us about the home buying process and would go through each step making sure we understand. House searching with Betsy is not a just a simple matter of visiting a house. She looks at a house and can tell you in details what is right and wrong with it. She'll discuss pros and cons, location, associated cost, layout, possible improvements down the line and even feng shui (if you are into that thing). House hunting, which I thought would be a "necessary evil" turned out to be a pleasurable experience.
You probably don't realize but there’s a lot of background activity that goes on during the home buying process. Betsy is great in taking care of these. This is important because you can concentrate on finding the best home. If there is a problem with the property, she'll get it rectified with minimum involvement from you. Most of the time, my role was simply to say yes or no :). They were easy decisions to make as she presents them eloquently.
Our closing went by without a hitch and ahead of schedule. I heard from others that closing was hectic, full of paperwork and commotion but ours was a non-event and painless. Thanks to Betsy's planning and coordination.
