Hey Bowhunter, thanks for giving us the end of the story!  Too often we get all involved in a question or problem, then never hear what happens.  I hope you and your new home are happy together for years and years to come.

Hi Tracy, as I think about it, I suspect that is what Vanessa is working on - refinancing with equity that ends the PMI.   Vanessa, as Tracy says for that you need an appraisal.  What is either puzzling or scary or both, is the part about the mortgage company saying the zestimate would confirm the value of the house. 

Before making a life long commitment, it is wise to get some couples counseling.  May you both live happily ever after!

The zestimate found on this site should never be used to calculate a home's value.  Here is the link explaining what it is.A local RE agent can visit your home, put together a list showing what comparable homes in the area have sold for.  Or you can pay for an appraisal. 

Go to the Homes menu option and enter your complete home address.  That should pre-load your city/state so you can then click the Local Info menu entry and see the location you want to see.

Circumstances around the condition of the house, contingencies in your contract, and the reasons for wanting to cancel the purchase (none of which are mentioned here) may all come into play here.  Contact a good RE attorney asap.  It is possible you and the lawyer can present a package to the seller that terminates the sale without invoking a law suit.

I realize this is probably a very silly question, but does your employer offer any kind of help for transferred employees?  Also, have you spoken to a property management company about possibly leasing the home you are leaving?  If the lease did not cover but helped pay the mortgage, that could give you time to investigate options (or, depending on the location, for your home's value to improve). 

Hey, the man had a really great answer and no one had asked the question recently.  I have mixed feelings about this tactic.  Sometimes the bumped discussion is timely and clarifies other recent discussions/questions that are hedging near, but not on, point.  Sometimes a search brings up and old posting and the poster does not notice the age.  Sometimes a posting' bump is just a poster' bump.

Make sure you have the best 'work triangle' your space allows, stick to neutral colors except where you can repaint (if you want purple and orange, paint the walls but keep the counter tops and cabinets on the neutral, timeless side), try to keep the look consistent with the architecture of the house.  But, if your kitchen is not working for you and you can afford to upgrade, seriously consider doing it.  And, if the house is contemporary but you really, really want a country kitchen I say go for it, but plan to make some adjustments when you put the house on the market.
