Ben Nelson was born and raised in the oceanfront community of Virginia Beach, VA. Growing up he always enjoyed being active, whether it was through surfing, team sports, or fishing. After years of managing a major retail shop, Ben knew he wanted to challenge himself in new ways. Moving to the Outer Banks of North Carolina seemed like a place of new opportunity. Ben had gotten to know the Outer Banks very well throughout his life, spending countless time surfing and exploring the beautiful coastline.
Always having an interest in entrepreneurship, real estate seemed like the perfect fit. In 2003, that dream became a reality. Starting his career in the rental division of Resort Quest Outer Banks. Ben spent a couple of years "learning the ropes" handling vacation rental properties and studying the ins and outs of the business. While he worked hard during the day to help property owners and guests, he spent his evenings submersed in real estate school. By March of 2004, Ben earned his North Carolina Real Estate Broker's license. In 2005 he accepted a full time position as Associate Broker in the sales division of Resort Quest and joined the local and National Association of Realtors. In 2006 he was awarded "Rookie of the Year" with over 4 million in total sales. December of 2007 Ben obtained his Virginia Real Estate Broker's License. In January of 2008, seeking to expand his knowledge in residential construction and development he signed on as Associate Broker with Island Homes, Inc. There he managed several of his own investment projects and eventually became Broker-in-Charge of sales and owner operator of the company.
In January of 2012, Ben founded Southern Cottage Realty, Inc. With an emphasis on always putting his buyer and seller clients 1st, Ben is dedicated to making Southern Cottage Realty the go to source for Outer Banks Real Estate.
Bought a Single Family home in 2009 in Kill Devil Hills, NC.
We we so happy to purchase a second home using the services of Ben Nelson in 2009. He showed us several properties and was knowledgeable, friendly, and was able to successfully navigate a complex short sale. Should we decide to buy again, we would definitely use Ben!
Bought a Single Family home in 2012 for approximately $275K in Princess Anne, Virginia Beach, VA.
Ben was very helpful during the purchase of our first house. He was quick in providing services including getting the most recent sale and listing information to us as it came on the market. He picked us up and took us around to various houses. We were looking for quite some time and his dedication to us during that time was considerable even though we were not happy with any of the houses on the market during that time. And then we got finally a listing and photos of the house we wanted to purchase, and within 20 minutes of that listing we had an appointment to view the house that evening; we were the first family to see the house and we signed a contract the next day which closed soon thereafter. Ben was quick in getting us the documents and walked us through with what we had to do as first time purchasers. Ben was also able to pass through much of the closing costs on to the seller which saved us a few $1,000.More Less

When my husband and I were interested in Outer Banks property, we contacted Ben Nelson. He asked a number of questions about what we wanted in a home. When we met with Ben, he had already lined up a number of properties for us to see. He was patient, spending the better part of a day with us, and answered every question we had. Ben's guidance and advice have been a blessing for us. Ben is a true professional whose knowledge of real estate is excellent.More Less
