this school is great based on a athletic perspective but academic it is a horrible school staff is unwilling to compromise at all with a student on any schedule changes unless they find it satisfactory not what the student finds satisfactory so much for being able to think for yourself as a young adult. I was enrolled in this school and was in the dual enrollment for the technical centers aeronautical program. I dropped out of this school however and joined florida virtual school for my final year due to the assistant principal at this school harassing me during a parent conference meeting. Some of the staff at this school should be thoroughly looked into before being promoted into such placements but that doesn't seem to be that case. However overall the school itself is a nice scenery but wasn't the scenery for me because of certain individuals and the way they handled things. Students as high school students have no freedom what so ever felt like I was being punished every day I attended this school. What would help improve Charlotte high would be staff who understand students better and less elementary school rules for future society leaders.

I was a student at Charlotte High from 2007-2011. Charlotte High has a great Advanced Placement program. They are constantly involved in the community. There are many after school programs and many electives. Yes the year that Charlotte High got a D rating but that year was one of the lower performing class. The next year we were an A school. Port Charlotte High was an A the year Charlotte got a D. And then the next year it flip flopped. I can tell you it is not the teachers downfall in many cases but lack of participation from students. Charlotte High in 2007 up until 2010 was recovering from Hurricane Charley and I can only assume education was effected. The new school is amazing and has state of the art equipment. There is plenty of enough room for a growing population and new classes were being introduced when I left. All of the teachers are very knowledgeable and helpful and the administration is an always present force. Fights happen rarely and are quickly taken care of by the school police and deans. My sister was at Charlotte until 2013 and Charlotte High was making many improvements. I can't wait to see how this school continues to rebuild and grow.
Charlotte High School is now an A school so think twice before you talk. this is an amazing school. personally i am a senior at Charlotte i went to PCHS to take the SAT's and the teacher i had was horrible mean in everyway. i knew i wasn't at home there. Charlotte's teachers are very welcoming and amazing. we have such good chemistry between the teachers and students. so now we're an all around great school. great education great staff great SPORTS! LETS GO TARPONS! GATA!
Charlotte is a D-school for being Destroyed by Hurricane Charley still being rebuilt after five and a half years.. D for Deplorable conditions like no students in the history of Charlotte County have ever endured portable facilities no lockers getting soaked in rain storms. Detours over a spread out construction site campus cause students to lose 60-minutes of teaching each day just getting to class. Yet in 2009 Charlotte High School still leads Charlotte County in the important things SAT ACT scores and in Advance Placements (OK athletics too). If a school with a long and proud history that is the center of a tight-knit supportive community appeals to you then come be a Tarpon. Port Charlotte and Lemon Bay also offer fine programs - Please don t judge those schools by individuals who feel the need to go to any site that will have them and trash a neighboring school.
Everything is great here from sports to academics.
This is a 'D' school anyway you slice it up. There are lots of excuses and made about the numbers but the fact of the matter is a D is a D. Port Charlotte is an 'A' school for the past two years. They achieved this for a reason. Charlotte's school culture is much more oriented towards athletics. Don't say that it is balanced it isn't. Think twice before enrolling your child here.
Both teachers and administrative personnel have been so friendly helpful and respectful toward parents and students. We really like this school!!
The school is taking way to long to build and the football field cost way to much money but there was a reason it was built first and as you can see if you go to our school that where the old one was in now occupied with other buildings and another construction site.. It also has many activities after school though a lot is directed to sports arent all schools and they have many honors programs for those who are no tinto sports. Also if you are a good student and want to help improve your education you are able to go to the Edison College campus. Which I think is a great opurtunity that not enough students take advantage of.
Truthfully i think the school focuses way to much on sports and not much on academics. from what i've seen we have really bright students at the school but nothing academically is being overviewed or praised. A students wins a rare scholarship in florida (or thee are scholarship oppurunities) and it takes a 5 sec blip on WCHS but the football team losing against another school takes 2 minutes to show. i don't know i just think the school could be a bit better in some areas then others.
Some of the teachers here think that if you teach the students they will just forget what they are taught anyway and refuse to teach students traditionally. Instead they tell the students to teach themselves by giving them a list of things to do with no guidence and expect them to turn in superior work. I wish I could give no stars.
Respond to post April 26 the only reason that it seems athletics are taking the front seat in rebuilding the school is because there is room for the facilities. It is important to the school to keep the buildings that they can which is making it difficult for rebuilding but will preserve the history of the school. Charlotte High has a strong alumni base and school spirit and just because a hurricane destroyed the school there is no reason we should not make it the best school it can be! I loved Charlotte High school and the teachers. It is a great school that has oppurtinites for every student as long as they want to be part of the school.
I think Charlotte is a very good school. My son attends. He is getting the opportunity to get ahead in his studies for his career. Not all schools have classes for them to attend during high school that give them the head start for their college career. I'm glad my son is getting such a great opportunity.
Terrible school very unhealthy buildings. Careless teaching. Much more worried about sports!
(addition to next one) In addition to this charlotte high prides itself on sports because we really do have some amazing athletes no doubt about it. So seriously get over the football stadium its the nicest one around and it has one of the besst track and field facilities in the state. Last people have complained how the sports get all the free funding they want while the arts and acedemics get nothing. Wrong! I myself am an athlete and I can personally tell you its no all fun and games all the time. In the off season all the teams spend hours of their own free time collecting donations and paying for camps(etc.) out of their own pocket. If you havent noticed there have been budget cuts and its only going to get harder from here. Not to mention we also have a great MUN team and art deparment.
I'd give this one a much lower rating but since I've never attended this school directly and it is indeed the rival school I'm gonna be fair and rate this one as average. If you're wondering how I can rate this it's because I know people that go there and complain about the school still being in portables and how their principal is putting athletics ahead of academics. I find it redicules that they have wasted $1 000 000 on a stupid football field and there main school building isn't even completed yet. While some of the money was donated a great portion came from tax payers. What a waste of tax payer dollars!
As previosly stated by others sports seem to be more important than education. The school should have been rebuilt before the football field. Want to build morale build intelligence. With intelligence everything else comes easily.
Excellent community contact. Great honors programs
The school is in portables and they feel the need to start building the football stadium before rebuilding the school. Education always comes second in this school. The athletes will admit that they get special priveleges. In some courses there is only one teacher to teach every student taking the course! The guidance counselors don't take the time to help student at all. My daughter made an appointment for something with her guidence counselor and didnt get into his office until it was too late for help! When picking classes they give out books with information about the courses offered yet when they go to their guidence counselos for help they yell at them and tel them to hurry up without even letting them know which courses they need to take. The office staff is the worst. They are very rude and won't even get off of their cell phones.
I believe that more kid's would join afterschool activity's if there was bus transportation like sarasota county has. My son is doing better here at charlotte high then he has ever done in sarasota county school's. Communications between school and myself is a big a+.
Charlotte High School is a very poorly administered and educated school. Contrary to what the previous posters have said the school is not safe or comfortable. Money that should be devoted to academics and rebuilding is channeled into athletics the school is a utopia for sports. However for the more wholesome productive and rewarding extracurricular activities such as the fine arts or academic clubs forget any sort of balance of money. While the athletic clubs bask in the neverending cashflow that they receive the fine arts programs and academic clubs are forever in debt and therefore must go without. Please I beg you not to attend this school.
