My child went to Upchurch for kindergarten and will not be returning for 1st grade. The building is old and overcrowded. My child's teacher couldn't spell his short common name correctly. She constantly tried to teach him to spell it wrong. He began to have identity issues because she refused to correct it since and I quote "it was spelled wrong the first week." We had multiple e-mails several conferences and contacted the principal about how she kept spelling his name wrong. I should have gone to the school board. Don't bother seeing the principal with issues--it won't do anything. It never stopped my child just stopped caring. The last week of school all the certificates boards and papers had the wrong spelling. I asked why and got the same response "it was spelled wrong the first week.'' So what? That was nine months ago and you have no other child's name spelled wrong not even the kids with super long names and more vowels than anything. The teacher assistant constantly marked every child every single day as "red light." If every single student gets in trouble every single day (and I mean all the kids) then where is the incentive to behave? Goodbye Upchurch.

I pulled my kids from this school after 1 year (2009-2010). Teachers won't return e-mails and the district sets up a filter so all "outside" domains are sent to spam. involving the Principal was just as frustrating and at no point was the well being of my children the most important focus. I was told that my child was "right where he was supposed to be" performing at grade level. An outside clinic performed an academic assessment that showed his potential was much higher than what he was achieving in school. Guidance counselor principal teachers all failed to respond to this assessment thay had to be pushed to look at y kid as an individual with unique needs. Spent so much time at home reteaching and unteaching grammer and proper use of English language. Very disappointed in this school teachers and administration. Everything was a hassle and took too much effort on their part. Teach to the lowest demoniation and let the higher performing kids just meet grade level where they should be.

My son attended Kindergarten last year and he had a great teacher and teacher's aid. I was very happy with his education then and we are looking forward to first grade. The buildings need major updating but the teachers were wonderful.

The excellent caring teaching staff. The dedicsation of their principal who runs a tight ship.

My child has attended here since kindergarden and he is now in fourth grade. He has done well every year. He passed eog in 3rd grade with no problems beacause he had a good teacher (Mrs. Steele). We are getting a new principal for the 2009-2010 school year her name is Mrs. Southerland. I think she will do a great job and she is a very nice lady.

This school has an excellent pre-k program with a dedicated staff that really cares about the children. The facilities could be better but when you have a teacher and assistants who love and care so much about your child's education then you can deal with the building.

I must say that I heard a lot about the school prior to enrolling my school(negative). Yet once I enrolled my children and saw the progress they made in such a short time my entire outlook changed. My son who is in the 1st grade was behinde @ his other school but when he started Upchurch he ended up right on track. I am pleased with the teacher to student ratio and how the teachers enjoy teaching. I do my part as a parent and stay on top of them just like I would if they were at any other school. Keep up the good work guys my 3 boys are loveing it here.

I think the school is great! I have no problems with my son attending that school.

I have two children who have attended this school from 2005 and presently now in 2008. This is a good school. I really have high praise for their spanish immersion program. Students start this program in kindergarden and they finsh it in the second. Students are given the opportunity to learn a second lanuage because 50% of there class work in done in spanish and 50% is done in english. I was very impressed because there aren't alot of schools that offer this. This school is not perfect which no school is but if you stay envolved with your childs education everything else will be provided by the faculty.

We PCS'd away from NC and found out that our son was FAR behind at his new school after having spent a year & a half at Upchurch. His current school in Texas is great but he had a hard time catching up with the curriculum. Upchurch is overcrowded and the quality of education is poor. My son would came home with homework and I would have him do it each day- there was no indication to tell me that there was anything wrong with what he was learning (my 1st kid to go to school). The move to Texas was an eye OPENER! He was so far behind that we risked him having to stay back a year! I am so glad that we moved because I would not have realized what he was missing until it was too late. Won't make this mistake again!

My children have been at this school for about 2 years and this school is very unorganized. Three weeks into the new school year I received a call from the school office asking why I haven't sent my daughter to school yet but she had been there since the first day. We are very unhappy with this school and we're planning to move to another area because of it.

My chldren went to upchurch for almost three years. We were happy to leave. The school is extremely overcrowded and we saw the teacher quality start dipping. It was also difficult because the discipline policy was not very strong. Please keep in mind that it is located in a poor county with not many resources.

This is a fantastic school! Our children attended there for 2 years and were very happy with it. We were very sad to see Mrs. Burke go though. She was one of those teachers that kids grow up and remember the rest of their lives. My children also loved having Spanish classes! The principal is wonderful too. Any time I spoke with her she was very open and listened and always followed through right away! If only all of the schools in Hoke County were as good as this one! And lastly their 'military kids' activities that they did were very heart-warming. The 'Wall of Heroes.' It made Daddy being in Iraq much easier on the kids!

My children attended Upchurch Elementary for at least 4 years. I couldn't ask for a better school. Both of my girls are honor students now in 7-11 grade. We are a military family and if we could I would be back in Hoke County Schools in a heart beat. Keep doing what you do and you will go far.

To all the staff at Upchurch I give you a great big Thank you! My son has attended Upchurch all 6 years. Hard to do as a military family. I have had a wonderful opportunity to get to know many wonderful people that work there. Not once have I felt dissatisfied with anything at Upchurch. I will be very sad to leave and move on as this is my son's last year there. For a school in Hoke County NC it's a great place to be! Again thank you for 6 wonderful years!
