California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

Both my kids are attending Monte Verde Elementary School. I have to say this is so far the best school that I have know and proud to be part of. From the principle to teachers and volunteer parents. Everyone work together like a team to benefit our children. We are so far the have and maintain the highest school rating in the South San Francisco School District for public elementary school. I am a very proud mom of the school principle teachers volunteers and my children.

My son is new to Monte Verde Elementary School this year. We love this school!!!! Ms. Mirt the principal has been so helpful and kind since I met her in June 2010. I have seen and experienced first hand that she is a caring individual who cares about the her students the parents the staff and of course the faculty. Ms. Mirt is very involved at Monte Verde and often can be seen outside of her office chatting with parents students and participating in school events such as the walk-a-thon getting dunked in the dunk tank and attending PTA meetings. She has welcomed our family to Monte Verde and remembers who we are which is great. Ms. Mirt is very proud of her school and exudes school spirit. My son is a first grader in Ms. Meyers class. Thus far my son is doing great in school and is able to demonstrate what he is learning in class. He receives a good amount of homework each week which reinforces all the concepts he is learning in class. He gets spelling tests every Friday which is great. Monte Verde is a California Distinguished School and plans to retain that title and honor by holding the students to high standards. The veteran parents at Monte Verde are fabulous! They have also been very welcoming and are involved in the PTA and school events. It was great to see many of them at the Walk-A-Thon event especially the familiar faces from PTA. It is a great feeling to know that Monte Verde parents are also just as invested in the success of the children as Ms. Mirt the teachers and the staff. We haven't been at Monte Verde very long but I can honestly say that I am proud to be Monte Verde parent! We are truly blessed to be a part of such a wonderful community. Go Eagles!!!!

This is a great school in South San Francisco. It has excellent teachers and strong principal leadership. It has wonderful academic programs as well.

I have a 3rd grader and she has been at the school since grade K. We love all the activities and parent involvement. Ms Mirt is always available to hear out concerns and is very active in the school day with student to student issues. Its good to know they have a principal they can go to that will get to the bottom of any issues. My daughter LOVES everything about her school including the office staff lunch staff janitor yard duty staff parent volunteers and whoever else is part of the awesome MV team. All four teachers she has had have all been WONDERFUL and caring to her needs on all levels. They take time to answer all questions I have about my child. Keep up the GREAT WORK MV *I think it is awesome that the parents are so dedicated that the library is ran by VOLUNTEERS!

I have one child at Monte Verde and have been very pleased with the education and experiences she has received so far. The teachers are receptive encouraging and enthusiastic about what they do. Hats off to Principal Debbie Mirt for her dedication and commitment to Monte Verde - she is supportive open and seems to know almost every child's name in the school! The surrounding community is great and parent involvement is to be commended. I agree that there are the same parents that seem to be the core group for planning and executing events - as a working parent I'm glad they're there to provide students with different programs and events. It seems to me that with the earlier comment posted about needing new fundraising ideas and programs w/in the PTA could best be addressed by saying then get involved with the PTA - actions speak louder than words!

I've been a parent at Monte Verde for several years. I feel my children are receiving an excellent education. The teachers staff Principal and parents all work together to create a nurturing and challenging academic environment for our kids. The PTA members work hard to provide extra funds for the school as well as support for the teachers. Over the years I've seen them provide all playground equipment in the 'big' yard curtains for the stage the signboard audio and visual equipment a contribution every year towards field trips P.E. equipment and digital cameras for each grade. New parents and new ideas are always welcome so please come to a PTA meeting to share your vision with us!

Monte Verde is one of the best schools in the SSFUSD. I believe they have great teachers and a good principal. The only area that needs improvement is the PTA which lacks organization and direction. There is a small group of parents who seem to always do the majority of the event fundraising and coordinating which ends up being the same each year. We need 'fresh' ideas and old/new parents to become involved. Hey other schools have mandatory parent participation so why can't parents receiving a free education for their children make an effort to participate in your child's education? I can't seem to understand why you wouldn't want o.

After reading a different reviews I felt that the Monte Verde is one of the best school I can think of sending my child

Well my rate is based on my experienced as a parent with two children currently attending in this school. My two childrens are new in school but they very much like it. The morning assembly is a perfect way to start a good day for parents teachers and students. It reminds me of my old exclusive private school. The difference is that I don't have to pay tuition fees for my childrens. My childrens academic so far is excellent. Parents Teachers and Principal involvement are very professional and much better than other school that my childrens attended both private and public school. The school environment is excellent. Safety is very important for everybody especially for students staffs and parents. In Monte Verde safety is not perfect and there is room for improvement but the way the current budget and economics goes Monte Verde is about 8 on safety compare to others.

I read with great interest the comments of parents and students through the years. As a parent and a principal of a public school I find it interesting that many of the issues and concerns stated are very common to all schools. Publilc schools exists to serve many interests and needs. It is a real challenge to be on target all the time. Monte Verde hits the mark a vast majority of times. I have found M.V. to be an outstanding and loving environment. I say this not only because I have a child in the school not only because I am an educator but also because I have had three much older children also go through the school and experience the same quality and care that we see now. I want to thank Gary Talisano for his years of service his vision his compassion his love of children and his humanity.

Monte Verde is a great school because we have parents teachers administrators and staff working together to make it that way. We have a high level of parent involvement. The PTA generates a yearly school calendar a monthly newsletter a yearbook and maintains several web pages to keep parents informed. Additionally they work with the MV staff to provide many activities including assemblies field trips a pumpkin contest an Author's Faire a Birthday Book Club and many community events. Some of the wonderful community events include the Feast of Nations dinner the Family BINGO night and restaurant nights. The Site Council made up of parents staff and community members has created several committees to help better the school. Among them the Vision Statement Committee the Parent Handbook Committee the Tom Sawyer Committee and the Safety Committee. Both PTA and Site Council consistently encourage parent involvement! Monte Verde is run by two extremely capable and receptive principals. The teachers are pleasant and very involved with their students academic progress. I have nothing but respect for the teachers and staff there. Expect lots of homework. They also have a Homework Hotline available for parents and students. They incorporate good Physical Education. They offer Kung Fu classes for extra fee.

In this school district Monte Verde is heads above the rest and is comparable to quality San Fran schools like Rooftop. The staff and leadership are quite good but the school and the district could do so much more in terms of music arts and extra-curricular activities. Parent involvement as in the top-ranked CA public schools could be substantially better. MV as become the catch-all elementary school now that Hillside has been closed. Whether this affects its scores remains to be seen but even the 2005 scores show some possible slippage that is worrysome. Mr. Witter in 3rd grade is an excellent instructor and Principal T is approachable in my experience. MV needs greater parent involvement to match the Woodsides and Pleasantons.

Although the scores are good not a lot of extracurricular acativities are offered. Level of parent involvement is average. There are definitely more schools with higher level of parent involvement. I worry about the environment especially with open access during the day and no control of who is picking up the children (no badge).

Mr. T the teachers and the staff are great. The kids seem to love the school. I know there is a music program and sometimes they have an art therapist on hand. Unfortunately there are no sports programs. There seems to be a good amount of parent involvement.
