California Standards Test (CST)

In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

Arundel is the best! We have two kids attending here. We were immediately welcomed into the Arundel community by the parents and staff when we moved here- it feels like a family! One of my children has some learning challenges and there is great support offered. As others have noted Arundel has a high level of parent involvement. A large majority of parents are involved in the PTA. There are about 3 teachers per grade level. I think ALL of the Arundel teachers are exceptional. That being said the complaint about PTA parents getting "preferential teacher placement" seems a bit petty. The principal Mr. Paulson does a fantastic job. He has followed up with the few issues we have risen and if he hadn't I would feel very comfortable talking to him about it directly as he is very approachable. Great librarian PE coach secretary support staff. If you are not happy at Arundel you may be very unhappy with your child's educational experience elsewhere. We are so thankful to all of the people who make Arundel a wonderful safe and happy place for our children to learn.

I agree that PTA parents are able to navigate their children into the best teachers' classes but I believe the majority of teachers are fantastic and really do care about our kids. I also believe that in the majority of state schools your children's education has to be backed up at home and you cannot rely on what's being taught at Arundel to be sufficient. I do not agree that Mr Paulson is an effective Principal. His strings are controlled by San Carlos School District which has many flaws. Mr Paulson is very nice and agrees with everything you raise and then does nothing. His split grade classes have been disastrous and the school community cannot believe that those involved have kept their jobs. The school community is amazing though. The calibre of parents and how hard they work to support their children and teachers makes Arundel stand out. Beware of the teachers union!

Conveniently located high scholastic standards high parent involvement excellent principal. Building and equipment is a little out dated but they are slowly refreshing as budget becomes available.

Just as any other public school this school has some very good teachers and some very bad ones under tenure who cannot be fired. Even though percentage of good teachers is pretty high this school does have issues especially about how they assign teachers for each child. Teachers decide next grade's teacher assignment for each child. Just as in any other public school parents are very afraid to offend their kids' current teacher because of that. Looking at the class assignments it seems that this school especially is VERY biased to parents who are personally friends with teachers or administrators or to parents who are very involved in PTA or fund raising efforts. They can navigate the system well and get good teachers. Other kids who are not so fortunate to have well-connected parents will be left to mercy of luck. Well-behaved kids who have good grades that don't have connected parents got concentrated into a very bad teacher's class this year. This school is probably better than other California public schools but it needs improvements and most people are afraid to raise any issues.

This is our last year at Arundel. We have been pleased beyond expectations at this school. Teachers are skilled pleasant and dynamic. We are extremely happy with our new principal Mr. Paulson who is kind understanding and an excellent leader. I am always amazed by the amount of parent involvement and support in the classroom and by the (much needed) financial support most give.

Our oldest child has completed K-2nd entering 3rd and we have an entering kindergartner this fall as well. In our experience Arundel is a fantastic school with caring supportive teachers and staff members a great curriculum dedicated and highly involved parents and a solid citywide educational foundation and school PTA groups to supplement state shortfalls and increase enrichment -- not to mention great families! We couldn't be more thrilled with Arundel.

My daughter has completed K-3rd at Arundel entering 4th grade. This is a wonderful school caring and supportive teachers and staff. The teachers we have had thus far truly value the individuality of the student and support their growth. The state budget crisis has been very tough for our already underfunded school district but fortunately our community consistently rises to mitigate severe budget cuts through parcel taxes and donations to our education foundation. Aside from the budget problems I can't imagine a better public elementary school.

We are a new family that transferred in mid-year and Arundel could not have been more wonderful about making sure that we had all the information we needed and that our child was comfortable transitioning in to the new class. Teachers here seem to take a genuine joy in the kids the children seem smitten with their new principal and every parent seems to have active involvement. We are blown away.

If you have a child that speaks English and on a fast track to Stanford you are in the right school. If your child is not developing as fast as the school dictates the staff will be "very" involved in solving the problem (as long as you can take time off from work to come to a mid-afternoon meeting).

Overall this is a good school if your student is the over-achiever common to the Bay Area. Children who are struggling or who have learning challenges may find a less supportive environment and staff.

We are really happy about Arundel. My daughter has attended three elementary schools in the area so far including one private school and Arundel is the best among them. The principal teachers staff and parents are all great. We especially appreciate the teacher of my daughter's class. She is very loving and encouraging to my daughter. She always responds to our emails promptly and with positive and helpful insights. My daughter enjoys going to school everyday. Arundel also has very active parents participation. They get a lot of extracurricular activities and we enjoy them so much. Coming from a private school with supposedly more advanced academic background my daughter never complains about being bored here. She is actually excited about all the new things she is learning. We just wish we could have joined earlier!

My child has attended k-3rd grade so far at Arundel. My daughter is 4th generation at Arundel. My mother was the first to attend Arundel in the 1950's. Me and my siblings attended...Principal Kaufman is a strong leader and is liked. Mrs.Higgabothom is the best kindergarten teacher ever! Everyone loves her! The school is committed to helping students succeed. The curriculum is age appropriate .The location is ideal. And the upgrades and improvements are well under way. Parent involvement is outstanding. I highly recommend this school. It has been tried and test over the years and has proved to be a worthy and notable school. The generations keep coming back as a testament!

I always knew i wanted my daughter to be at Arundel. I heard nothing but great things about it before i even had children. She is now finishing up the first grade and is very happy there. Arundel is about to start focusing on Scientific studies. When she was in kindergarten her class recieved a duck egg which was in an incubator in the class for the whole school year. When the last month of school was winding down their duck hatched and they each got to take a picture holding the new little duckie that they watched and learned about everyday. We are very pleased with her school. All around greatness!!

Arundel is an outstanding elementary school. I attribute it to 1/ a caring active and creative principal 2/ parents very involved 3/ something not often mentioned a great location with a 'nook' feeling plenty of trees and heathy park close by - this contributes to kids well-being. Top notch.
