Great school with great kids! I visited there for the school's 50th anniversary and it was even more wonderful than when I attended in the 70s. Beautiful big library grass playfield iPads for students and a great caring staff.

Pershing middle needs a complete overhaul. Not all but most of the teachers have gotten to comfortable and therefore lazy. Following through with educational plans and accommodations seems to be challenging for many of them. Luckily my daughter is very self sufficient and seems to be doing well despite them. She finds the counselors cold and detached from the plight of navigating others behavioral issues. She states (and I agree) that all the note taking and grades based on notes makes her feel like a court reporter. She is great at taking notes now yet if you ask her what she learned about that days topic all she can do is repeat the notes. No actual learning is occuring. Next year is her 7th grade year and she will be switching schools.
I have been very pleased with Pershing thus far. My son is challenged loves his teachers and is thrilled about his experiences in the pre-engineering program. The teachers many of which have been at Pershing for over a decade are dedicated supportive and understanding. I also appreciate that my son has an adequate but not overwhelming amount of homework. While challenged he still has enough time to be involved in extracurricular activities without being overwhelmed.
Overall I am pleased with Pershing Middle School. I was told there was a zero tolerance for bullying and yet my son has been bullied several times. I have gone to the counselors and school office many times and still no changes are made. Other than that Pershing has great educational opportunities with band P.E. 6th grade camp and musicals which I think is great to get involved in a school whether it be a parent or child. This year my son has been doing alot better in his classes despite the bullying. I think stronger rules need to be in place.
I love this school. Two of my children attended Pershing and I'm hoping my third will have the chance. Unfortunately the new administration (namely the new principal) is ruining what used to be an amazing educational experience. She has taken away the block schedule drama and doesn't listen to parent input. I hope she sees the light and adjusts to the needs of our community.
My child has attended this school in the past. Lack of organization between teachers and lack of student safety due to bullying is why my child no longer attends.
Pershing was our first foray into public school in San Diego Unified and we were pleased and impressed especially given the critical budget issues facing the schools. The principal is passionate about the school and does an excellent job of communicating with parents. Our daughter an A student was challenged and engaged in all of her classes. The band program was especially helpful in that it enabled her to find a small group of like-minded students that helped her get comfortable at school. Yes student behavior is a little different if you come from a private school environment but kids are engaged and learning. The block schedule is great. We recommend this school.
it is great has excellent teachers supportive it has tutoring it has a principal that is strong and hard working
I had two children go through Pershing. Ms. Sullivan is an education goddess. There are many excellent teachers at Pershing who are dedicated to the profession. That being said the decision last year to combine GATE students with non GATE students resulted in my child being bored to death. Homework was completed in class and classes were taught at a slower rate than in previous years.
Three yrs ago my child was on the way to Lewis md.. That is until I spent time with the principal and on the campus of Pershing. I was awed by the classrooms I visited and also wanted my son to join the upcoming engineer class. Now my son excels in ways that I could never have dreamed of. He has a result of his work in the engineering class been slotted to assume an intern position on the day he turns 18 with a major engineering firm. Thank you Mrs Sullivan and thank you for the excellent staff that you have at there at Pershing. Sam Salazar
My child is a 6th grader at Pershing. The reason we chose this school over other middle schools in the area was becuase of its high GATE scores and classes that the principal liked to advertise. Much to our desmay the principal decided to have all students taught at a GATE level. As a result my bright child is put with others who barely know their multiplication table. She is bored because of the slow pace she is taught at and I am afraid she might be falling behind. The classes are big and the teacher can rarely give individual attention. The drama and the music teachers are great.
My child has done very well and loves going to school at Pershing. I have been very satisfied with her teachers and impressed with the principal.
If your child is not a top ranking student academically then they are lost in the system and do not get the help they need.
Fantastic School. My daughter Graduated last year and she had a perfect 4.0. I love the teachers and staff at this school. I recommend this school to everyone
My third daughter is attending Pershing Middle School. All of them are high achievers in the gifted program. I have been very pleased with the curriculum teachers staff and other students. My older girls are both 4.0+ students in High School and they both agreed that Pershing provided them with the tools to achieve greater success than their peers who attended other schools. The only negative would have to be the Spanish class where each girl found it neither to be dynamic nor very useful in learning the language.
Awesome school. Our children are high achieving/gifted and they have been challenged at every level at Pershing. Dynamic leadership and the teachers are just amazing. Nurturing and safe campus. They have completely prepared my kids for high school. Small school atmosphere on a large campus.
Pershing Middle has been a great school for my daughter last year and so far this year. The principal regularly greets kids as they arrive in the morning the VP's are active and visible. The teachers have been professional caring and available after school. The band teacher helped secure 1st place in a statewide competition last year although left for another school this year. The availability of a new engineering program this year is exciting and was my daughter's choice of elective. The drama department is very active with 2 productions offered every year and most interested kids are encouraged to participate. There is a level of parent involvement but I am unsure of the percentage.
Pershing is a fantastic school! The sent 120 students to the Greater San Diego Science Fair they will have an engineering lab in the Fall of '06 connected to www.pltw.org and the scores continue to go up every year. Student safety is not an issue as they have an amazing staff which looks out for all students and their needs. Also the curriculum for all skill levels is challanging. Our child is thriving their and we can't wait for our other child to go there in the fall!
The principal is exceptional--she knows every child. The teachers seem to really care about the children.
Great school!! Funding a little low so equipement not very high-tech...except for science. Great scince class and teacher.
