California Standards Test (CST)

In 2012-2013 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)

In 2012-2013 California used the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students' skills in English language arts and mathematics. The results for grade 10 students taking the test for the first time are displayed on GreatSchools profiles. The CAHSEE is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined by the state of California. Students must pass all parts of the CAHSEE in order to graduate from high school. If they do not pass it the first time, students have multiple opportunities to retake the test. The goal is for all students to pass both sections of the test.

My daughter has been attending school in this area since fourth grade. She was in her freshman year at canyon but since we moved she won't be able to go this year just because we are only a few feet away from the school's zone. We are very sad. My son graduated from Canyon and I think it's the best school. Now she will have to go to Golden Valley. Any ideas?

This school need a lot of attention in the area of getting its students ready for college. Counselor and some teachers are very political. If you want good recommendation you need to play some political games. Only a few students get all of the SCV Foundation scholarships and they are all in ASB officers. Yet every year counselors would tell parents that there are plenty of scholarships but no student apply.

Mr. Messina the principal at Canyon really tries to get parents involved. He holds wonderful information sessions (called the Parent Advisory Council or PAC) monthly at which he works hard to get a lot of information into the hands of parents and takes the time to listen to parent concerns as well. All of the teachers and support staff have been wonderful as well. The experience has been beyond our wildest expectations for our son.

I attended Canyon my freshman year and it was wonderful. I didn't know anyone when i first started but the staff and other students are great. Even for the large campus population it feels like home.

Canyon High has one of the most professional looking football fields I have seen. The students really seem to enjoy the school. It's nestled in the middle of the neighborhood. Easy access.

School is great. Santa Clarita schools are among the best in California and this school seems to be among the best. The teahers really seem to care and the community is great.

Children at the ends of the scale are well taken care off. By that I mean RSP and the honors. I have 2 children that have graduated from CHS and currently have a freshman and a 7th grader. I have had 2 RSP children and 1 honors child. I do have a big problem with the lack of enforcement of the dress code. Overall I am happy with my experience at CHS.
