I am a current student at SCMS and i hate it. All we do is write write and write. We do not learn much and the school overall is horrible. There is a serious mold problem that they think they "fixed". The food is horrible... Sometimes its under cooked. The studentsare horrible and misbehaving and the teachers take no action on anything. South charleston middle school has been nothing but horrible to me.

South Charleston Middle School is a concerned school and the staff is genuine and have total concern for the students they need more concerned parents in order for the school to excell

South Charleston Middle School is a terrible school unless you're just going here for sports. In 5 days I start 8th grade and I'm not very excited considering my past two years here. The principal Mr. Graves is only interested in sports and doesn't seem to care about most of the students. The staff are too nice and don't discipline the children who misbehave. The food is terrible and many children (including myself) don't eat lunch or breakfast because its unedible. A lot of teachers favorite the richer more athletic children *cough* Mr. Samuel *cough* and ignore the rest. Some of the teachers really love what they do and are great at it (Ms. Literal 7th grade English and Mrs. Norman 7th grade math.) There is a lot of bullying and the teachers dont seem to mind they pass out pamphlets and teach about it but take no action when they see it. In conclusion if you send your child here make sure they do their homework because the teachers don't care if they do or not pack their lunch if you want them to eat and if they say they're getting bullied or saying they want to transfer let them! It won't get better I promise. I've been here 2 years so far and it's tolerable but bad.

My school was terrible. I was there from 6-8th grade and I'm going to South Charleston High now. This school is physically and also academically crumbling. It was built over 80 years ago and is in dire need of crucial updates. Although some teachers truly wanted the best for their students there were some that were completely unacceptable. One year we had a teacher who did not teach at all she only surfed shoebuy.com. The same year a teacher was hired that failed all of her students in the first nine weeks because she refused to grade the papers. On the physical side there is evidence of mold spores water damage and cracked plaster. I personally feel that this school is on the verge of becoming inoperable. If you are considering sending your child to this school DON'T. Most of the money is invested into the 6th grade to make it seem like a better school. Once your child hits 7th grade the reality will hit. Usually it's too late for them to leave because they want to stay with friends. If I could relive my middle school experience I would most certainly not serve it at South Charleston Middle School.

I am so sorry to hear how you feel. I know for a fact that there ARE teachers who care about what they do and how the kids feel because I for one do care! I work hard everyday to have lessons that I hope kids will like but that also causes them to THINK about what they are doing. As a teacher it is very upsetting to care about teaching while having students who are not willing to do what is expected. I hope you are not one of them. No matter where you go there will always be problems ...you just trade one for another when you transfer. As long as you are doing the right thing you'll always land on your feet academically. I hope things get better for one. Find a teacher you can talk to about this ...there are caring teachers!

I am a current student at SCMS and Mr. Graves is not very good with sports. I was going to play baseball and I did but the coaches told us that he puts more money into softball than baseball. So the softball team has their own field and the baseball team doesn't

This school is just horrible. The students are rude and immature and most of the teachers don't know how to really teach. This year i'm in the 8th grade and we have 2 new teachers and they know NOTHING about the subjects they're teaching. We just get handouts or bookwork. Most of the students are potheads and drama starters and they have NO class. Mr. Graves does not care whatsoever about the students. We barely have any dances or anyone focused on getting a good education. This school is just terrible and i've heard dunbar middle is too. I can't imagine what the high school is like because i haven't heard good things about it either other than it has good academics. But that doesnt even matter to these kids. I'm considering going to another highschool (GWHS) because i can't stand anyone from south charleston or dunbar and i truly fear south charleston high. This school is just not worth anything i hope my kids never have to go to a ghetto trashhole like i did for middle school.

I am extremely dissapointed in this school. The children are not challenged in any way. My child is in the 7th grade and has not done any kind of science or history project. I think they do the mininum requirement to be considered a school of learning.

I am a grandmother I rate your school as being excellent teachers are helpful to my grandson.

Extremely disappointed in the performance of this school. I have one child who just finished there and is now woefully prepared for high school. When attempting to talk with teachers I was met with an air of arrogance and disrespect. Every question asked was returned with defensiveness and a condescending air. Our younger children have all been moved to different schools so as to avoid them attending SCMS. A once wonderful school gone tragically south. Its a shame.

I have gone to this school for a while and I love parts of it. I worked in the office and the staff is sweet and caring and there is a big emphasis on sports most students are not em smart. The teachers want to teach but the student's won't let them. I want a good education but the drama and everything is horrible. South Charleston is a great part of town. The school is overfall good. If you aren't thinking about drama.

In my personal opinion this South Charleston Middle School will continually need serious improvements in order to meet the needs of students. There are behavioural setbacks that effect the overall feel of the school setting. Disorganization is another issue this particularly includes the scatter-brained efforts put into extra-curricular activities. Parental involvement is practically non-existant or encouraged anywhere. I encourage the families to work hard guiding their children at home teaching them manners and good citizenship! Nobody expects a broadway production but a warm smile wouldn't hurt anyone.

I am a former student of SCMS. This school has to be the worst school that I ever went to. The secretary and the counciler are very rude to parent that come in the office. Especailly if you are getting you child out of school. But once I got a D in my algebra class in eigth grade. My mother was disapointed and had a parent teacher conference with all of my teachers. During the conference they were so rude to my MOTHER. I could not believe how bad they acted to her. My mom thought of taking me out of this school but since it was my last year she thought I could finish up the year. This is the worst school I have ever seen.

My daughter currently attends SCMS. I have not been very pleased with the academics. The students seem to have too much down time and the emphasis weighs too much on sports rather than academics. I realize there is a mix of achievement levels but there are some great students who deserve a good education. I believe that there are excellent teachers who are not supported in the appropriate manner therefore affecting our students.

The clerical staff at scms is so rude to both parents and students. Upon entering the office you are simply ignored and the when acknowledged it is with a rude tone and as if you are a bother. The kids are ingored until personal conversations are finished as I a parent have been on numerous occasions.

I have to agree that SCMS went downhill after Ms. Woo left. Don't get me wrong my child has received a good education but as far as having a good sports academics program they are the pits. I don't think that the new principal likes sporting activities. The kids uniforms for track are falling apart you can't get anything for volleyball and you have to pay an arm and a leg for cheerleading. Why can we not get help with these issues. As for extracurricular activities these children are in middle school not pre-school they could have a dance in the evening instead of from 4 to 6 pm. Grade school kids at least get to have them from 6 to 8 and why can't they have a PROM.Kids would be more eager to learn if you would do some fun things for them. They are not babies.

I agreed that the special ed help at this school is terrible. The change in leadership has been horrendous. The loss of Mr. Messinger and Ms. Woo has sent this once good school to the pits. I'm glad my child has only 1 more year but we may change schools because of the poor instruction this past year.

i don't know why these parents view this school negatively but my son has gone there for two years now and i have nothing but the best things to say about the school as far as south charleston bring a bad part of town it has less crime in it then the othe cities surounding it. Our stundents are well behaved at outside events and very well supervised in and outside of the school. I would recommend south charleston to any parent.

South Charleston Middle School is the worst school my child has ever attended.

South Charleston Middle School is a very good school the teachers are nice and kind. I would not advise you to send your kid to SCMS if your child is a special ED. student. The special Education department is not very good. [And] the head of the special education department is not to blame for the entire depatment... SCMS has an outstanding student council.
