Wisconsin Student Assessment System (WSAS)

In 2011-2012 Wisconsin used the Wisconsin Student Assessment System (WSAS), which includes the WKCE and WAA, to test students in grades 3 through 8 and 10 in math and reading, and in grades 4, 8 and 10 in language arts, science and social studies. The WSAS is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Wisconsin. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

I heard great things about this school and decided to send my child here but to be honest.... this school isn't that great. Most of the staff are rude and don't really care about your child's success unless your child is the "model" student. They say they don't believe in bullying but then they do nothing about it. Actually I've learned that the schools says a lot but does nothing to back up what is actually said. I would not recommend this school if your child has been bullied mental illnesses or has ADHD/ADD. They don't have time to give equal education rights to students that are not the "model" student.

The school is a very clean place. I enjoyed attending there. It's not diverse and I have attend here since 9th grade and graduated. I would say there are pros and cons about this school. It's not quite challenging enough nor competitive unless it is about sports.

I went to South Milwaukee and graudated from there. I attended MPS from k4 - 8th grade and wanted to get out of that system as soon as possible being the only "acceptable" schools to attend were on the otherside of town. Im a mixed African-American female so it was a big shock going from a predominantly African American school to South Milwaukee. It is an okay school the teachers are great and very involved in the students lives I just wish the school was a bit more diverse. Also it is hard adjusting to the atmopshere if you did not attend the SM school district all your life. Majority of the kids grew up and having being going to school with each other since kindergarten. The campus is very nice and the block scheduling has its perks and downfalls sometiems you can only teach so much so there is a lot of down time which students use to mess around or do nothing. I enjoyed my four years but there are somethings that I would change.

This school is really new. It has the most exciting PAC especially for the arts music with the bands and amazing choir departments!!

Mydaughter attends the school and I like what it has to offer in education and extra curricular activites.

Beautiful campus and for the record it was $48 Mil. - which is cheap compared to recent referendums. But the district is in a consistent no-win budget situation until the WI State fixes it's funding formula and the school board takes on the teacher union to freeze wages/benefits or it considers more online programming to remain competitive. If your student has chronic medical issues do not consider SMHS. The block scheduling which gives students a realistic feel of what a college work load could be like will bury a student who can't make it to school on a regular basis. The block schedule at SMHS also penalizes students who want to be in Arts and Musical Arts programs as they do not offer decent curriculum opposite the Arts/Music classes. Due to dysfunctional music programming at the SM middle school I forsee the SMHS music department to start shrinking starting in

I am a student here at South Milwaukee High and I must say that It's a great school but I just think that our school has gotten a horrible reputation. Everything is turning out to be just like Palaski. Only we don't have bad things going on everyday. I like most of my teachers. They are always there for you when you need help. I down fall on our teachers is the number of students we have in a class. When we have a question they can't always come to you and answer it for you. Otherwise it's a decent school and I like it here.

It is a good school. I like my teachers because they help me learn and I am from Albania. I have lots of friends and do lots of things in school.

Most parents in this district have aborgated their responsibilty for ensuring their children receive a quality education. Instead of exercising their own decision making ability they blindly follow the recommendations of administrators and special interest groups. If the quality of education matched the physical facility this would be the number one high school in the Milwaukee metro area. South Milwaukee is a text book example of 'educrats' and mindless special interests running wild. There are valid and obvious reasons why South Milwaukee is rated 3rd from the bottom in terms of performance with only the Cudahy and Milwaukee Public schools Districts performing worse in the metro area.

South Milwaukee High School is an okay school. Class sizes are high in some classes 30 kids are in there. A few teachers work hard to ensure your child is getting the best possible education while others do not care. In order for a child to succeed one would have to work hard on their own and get lots of extra help before and after school. It all rides on the child to do well.

I have two students enrolled now and because of the budget cuts recently enacted the class sizes are averaging around 30 students. My one daughter has already complained about this in her AP Chemistry class. The music program is exceptional with lots of parent involvement as are the theatre and drama departments. The play and musical are always well done. The teachers have been exceptional in giving my girls extra help when it was needed. School work is always stressed to come first before extracurricular activities which are very numerous. I would say on the whole that So. Milwaukee High School is a place where one can get a quality education.

Had 3 children go through the school all are in college. One graduated in the top 5% and now attends Purdue University where she is majoring in actuarial science. It is a great school for an education if you apply yourself.
