Im going to stephenson middle school and I would like to know when does school start!?

I am a parent of an 8th grader at this school. I have to say that the problem starts with the head. The principal needs to be replaced with a more qualified leader. She seems to be disconnected with the problems with her teachers which directly affects the students and puts their education in jeopardy. I am applauled at my son's grades declining since coming to this school 3 years ago. He like many of his friends hates this school and feels like the teachers are not qualified instructors. Many people say pay the teachers more and you will get better results. I beg to differ. Teachers from my error taught for the love of it; not for the money. They simply loved teaching. When you have a passion for something you do it well even if the money is not six figures. "Where did all the great teachers?" Most of them have retired....Stephenson Middle school needs to treat 90% of their teachers as if they were involved in the CRCT scandal in APS and "FIRE" them. Get rid of the "sugar free" teachers and get the "Real" sugar back into our classrooms...Our children's education is in serious trouble~ A concerned parent of two children in this school system....Parkview school here we come!

I strongly dislike this school. I do agree that the teachers are horrible. I'm currently on team 7D and i absolutely hate it! The math teacher is constantly giving us homework assignments that we have no idea how to complete them. Just the other day the "administrators" made us get in a line the whole seventh grade and made us all late to connections. That same day both health classes were late for sixth period. i was very upset that i was missing science. On top of that the students there are ignorant. this school deserves -5 STARS!!!!!!!!! I attended Wynbrooke and this school is at least 10 steps down.

I totaly agree with your response with Team 7D The langauge art teacher she is very rude and disrespectful. I often told the Assisant principle about 7th grade teacher he would never do anything concerning this teacher attitude My Son is in 8th grade now.. I pray he have a great year and dont have no more tearcher like her..

I am not too impressed with the academic standards of this school. They mean well but the CRCT scores do not lie. Get it together people! Your science and math scores are embarassing. Please find qualified instructors to teach these courses. There is going to be a rude awakening when these kids go to college. I pulled my daughter and son out of this school and placed them in a charter school. As parent and employer I need my children and students to be competitive with the global economy. Yes you can go ahead and blame it on budget cuts but even then the leaders of our schools should make a constant effort to hire not only qualifed but talented instructors as well and get rid of the idiot teachers who are just there to collect a paycheck. Do you know what happens to employees in my business who are just there to collect and not contribute to the success and prosperity f it? They get fired! Jut like any other place of employment.

I was a little skeptical towards my son attending Stephenson Middle. Coming from Wynbrooke Elementary a school that I absolutely love and adore with high test scores high parent involvement etc. I was afraid that this school will lack the qualities and discipline he received from Wynbrooke. Well I am thoroughly impressed! The teachers do care and they are strict with assignments and each teacher knows my son's week and strong points and he still has straight A's. I love Stephenson Middle and they have all of my support. There could be better Parent involvement but that's on the parents not the teachers! For the kids acting up getting into fights or whatnot ;you have that at every school and that's an issue with the child and parent. Team Stephenson all the way and he will be attending Stephenson Highschool.

I love Stephenson Middle because of the dedicated teachers.

I can only speak from my personal experiences as a parent. This school is absolutely horrible. I gave the school two stars just because the school looks nice the class rooms are large and a select few of SMS staff seem to want to help kids. I witnessed on multiple occasions teachers yelling and belittling their students. I was waiting to see if they were going to spank them. One of the teachers even admitted she had anger management issues. The Principal can be hard to get a hold of but the ghetto vice principal is always around. There are fights practically everyday either at school or at the bus stops. Allot of the teachers are very young and inexperienced. And they take up for each other like their in some sort of teacher fraternity. I pulled my son out of this school and put him on home studies.

Stephenson Middle School is a great school with it's strongest asset being an outstanding student population. The teachers are also committed knowledgeable and caring. We have a strong supportive parent community and a wonderful administrative staff. We have all the elements that make us a strong community school.

Stepheson Middle School has been a very enjoyable & rembering epsisode in my life. I am currently in the 8th grade & are actively involved in 6 activities. The after school activities are very in-depth including the excellent enviorment. The teachers strongly encourage vast social skills & CRCT Prep. The only thing I have found a burden at SMS is the lunch. But thats life right? ) As I move on in life I am proud to say I was a Stephenson Middle Jaguar! Go JAGz!

I've been going to sms for 2yrs. At first I did'nt want to go but it's a great school and has great teachers and a great environment so you can actually learn. They also have great and loving principals and the best connections you will ever have.

My kids attended SMS last as 6th graders it was not their choice but once they got there and became involved in the activities they loved it. I am a student myself and was unable to attend PTA and teacher conference but that did not stop my kids teachers from calling me and letting me know what I needed to do to help improve their grades. I was very impressed with the teachers calling me regarding any issues with my children. I was also impressed with the level or security and the bus drivers who communicated with me regularly. I think that SMS is a great school.

I'm currently a seventh grader at stephenson and I think that there has been much improvment now that we have more stable staff. I myself am enjoying school. I know we have fights every now and then but if you look at our past you'll see that our best is yet to come. We also produce great music. Welcome to the crunkest bands in the south and the best suprerior voices. We have a place for everyone here!

The day has finally come Stephenson Middle School under new management. I am a very proud parent of a SMS seventh grader. I can say I had to experience all of the confusion at SMS in the 2004-2005 school year under the previous guidance. Thank God those days are over. I must say there is no comparison between the old administration and the new. Mr. Williamson told me last year when he was coming aboard that he was not here to make promises. He was here to make improvements for the benefit of our children. Believe me when I tell you I have seen a great improvement. Our registration day went perfect. All children received their schedules. The parents seemed very excited to see such a smooth transition take place. It really made the parents so happy they were excited to sign up for the PTA.

Stephenson Middle School has an awful reputation for being a poor school where there are fights gangs and bad teachers;but this is not true. My teachers this past year (2004 - 05) were great. I am now going to the 7th grade and I am certainly sure that there are no gangs and no bad teachers. It's not like your average middle school we only have 3 halls one for every grade so you wont get into any trouble with older people. All these things are at Stephenson High School. I mean of course we have fights but thats at every school. Our football team won the championship and finished our season 8-0 we have alot of other sports to. What is best is our band. There are different kinds like jazz band concert band there is begining band Intermediate and Adavanced. We also have a great chorus.

I agree with the June 2005 post. As parents we must demand the best from our children. Unfortunately some parents don't do their job. This causes the teacher to spend too much time on discipline not teaching. It's amazing the number of parents that show up for the band concerts but nothing else.

Sometimes parents tend to look at school personnel for making our children all that they should be. Well I challenge the parents to start this process at home. Then and only then will you start to see a difference in your child and schools that your child attends. Stephenson Middle parents take this attitude and build on it. Remember no school is perfect. Stephenson Middle is a good community based school with much to offer. It is saturated with academic achievements plenty of diversity and wonderful performing arts. It's much more than just a school with a great band program. Stephenson Middle is a tough act to follow...take a visit and see.

Stephenson Middles is a very unorganized school and it needs a major revamping of personnel. They are a disgrace to the Stephenson Community. Unfortunately I have one more child to be exposed to this school. I am looking at other choices for my child which may mean I will have to place my child in a private school. I try to support the public school system but enough is enough.

As I enetered Stephenson in the fall of 2004 I feared I had done a great injustice to my child. However in the very short months since we have had new leadership (Jan. 2005) I have seen a marked inprovement and Stephenson is on the way to recovery. Stephenson has the potential to be the #1 premiere middle school in Dekalb County and from what I have seen in the new leadership we will be there soon. Stephenson has some great teachers - it is the parental involvement that we need to improve in order to be #1. We have a very large number of high achievers and gifted students. We just need to REMOVE the distractions. I believe that if leadership continue to address the dresscode and discipline issues Stephenson will rise to the top in academic performance.
