I can understand how parents think the school is satisfactory but as a TMS student I know that it is not. First off it is a 50 some year old school that has never been renovated. That says some things in itself. Second I had a another student threaten to kill me on my first day of school. She also nearly pushed another girl off of the bleachers and hit an administrator. No one intervened. Our school is so underfunded that my lacrosse "team" is not a real team because they can't afford it. They constantly mortify us by mentioning how we are a club and our participation doesn't count for college or merit points. We don't even have a field to practice on. As an IB student I am saddened by how separated we are from other students. We might as well be our own school. Although I know that many schools have it worse if parents have a choice I advise them to pick another school.

Awesome is the first word compassionate caring helpful and uplifting! The work that the teachers have put in to make my daughter's education successful is amazing. Their concern for her is above and beyond my expectations! Thank you to all the staff you deserve more than you could ever be paid!
I have been in the IB Program in Sixth Grade for the first year Tuckahoe has had it and it has been terrible. The administrators just tell the students how bad they have been doing and the teachers give no support either (6th grade). The school is very preppy and if you don't have the right "thing" like your shoes you are picked on for three years and it is miserable. The IB Coordinator also says shes there in her office for questions but is so mean that nobody would want to go to her office. The school has Laptops but there are many complaints of them being really slow and breaking. The administration is overall strict to every student and none of them deserve it. That brings a negative attitude in the school. There are some great teachers that keep the rating above average but going to school has not been a pleasant expirience
To say I hated Tuckahoe Middle School would be a severe understatement. Everyone I ever met there students teachers strangers all were absolutely intolerably mean and spiteful. I often saw my classmates as a disease on the body that was the school growing and multiplying as they influenced their friends to be rude unproductive spiteful and lazy. Not once did I ever feel like a teacher was on my side and I would never ever ever consider putting my child in this school unless compared to the absolute worst alternatives. Kids will learn what they came for but they'll either become one of a crowd or be ostracized for three years. Pep rallies are frequent meaningless and stupid distractions that really don't rally any "pep". Teachers are often forced to quarrel with their students wasting class-time. Guidance counselors are completely apathetic to student problems and will think the problem is more with the student complaining than the student's problems. The only thing I DID enjoy about this school was finally getting on the bus home. All in all it's an unproductive mean and hostile environment.
We were very pleased to learn that Tuckahoe Middle will have an IB/Gifted program added next year. Our eldest went there and we had a very good experience. The teachers and guidance counselors were very helpful in working with our child. We thought the parent involvement was great.
I'm sad to say our experience at TMS is not a very positive one. My child hates this school and complains all the time about the student there and the teachers. Of course there are some great teachers but there are definitely teachers who are short fused that YELL and simply get irritated when asked questions. One teacher he had in 6th grade was a flat out BULLY! My opinion is that these teachers are like this because of the students they have to deal with. When you complain nothing changes. They have their hands full at this school. There are positives and negatives for sure but the negatives seem to out weigh the positives.
This school used to be a really good school but these past few years it has gone down hill. The area around the school is primarily the case. The school used to be prominently medium and upper class families but many have moved to the better areas like Short Pump. That's the main reason Tuckahoe Middle has gone down hill.
I wish the principal treated people with a little more dignity.
My family and I were very pleased with our experience at this school. The parents are involved the teachers are very capable and the students are excellent. This school provides excellent educational opportunities for advanced students in particular. The TMS family is close-knit and committed to each other and the communities in which they live.
Sometimes parents think too much about the education at school. I have noticed that there are awful water fountains at this school. Over the first two semesters at this school. I have suffered a bit because of severe dehydration. I am hoping the school will take care of this but if not I will draw up a plane and submit it to the faculty. I think this is a great learning environment- but it isn't if you are in non-advanced or non-accelerated classes. This is because troublemakers and no-work-doers are in those classes. I got excepted in to the IB program at Moody and didn't go to that school because all my friends were going to Tuckahoe. I am glad I went to Tuckahoe because this is a much better school. OVERALL 5 of 5
Its a shame that this school has gone down hill in recent years. The administration and the faculty just doesn't care anymore. The school has been nicknamed the hood of the west end. My son was threatened and assaulted in a classroom and the administration did nothing. The teacher was a first year teacher and changed her story three times to cover her inability to take control of her classroom. We are moving out of our community of 13 years that we have lived in and love because of this school. Read the reviews and you will see the older ones are great as this used to be one of the best schools in the region. But the last few years the gang problems have gotten worse.
In comparison to where I come from this school is terrific. I guess it just depends on what angle you are looking at it from.
I hope things improve now that we have a new school board. This once great school is out of control. I can't teach because of behavior problems and the administration doesn't support me. This will be my last year at TMS. (20+ year vet)
Have 2 kids one is first year student other is last year student at TMS. We are looking for a new home in the district. Great school teachers and admin. Based on my experience its worth it.
There are some truly great teachers at this school who really go the extra three miles and work with the students and parents to help out. Not all of them of course but we've seen enough to think this is the rule not the exception. One in particular kept our son from just giving up during a tough stretch. They're a bit strict but that's not all bad - our 6thgrader still needs the boundaries clearly set.
This is truly an exceptional school. When I drop my kids off I know they are safe and secure. The school is always on the cutting edge of ideas and change.
It's not all great at this school. Some students feel as if they are in prison. It is way too restricted. I understand some restrictions but in the morning students should be allowed to get loose a little before class.
Excellent school. Teachers staff and guidance really concerned about progress of students. Continuously encouraging to exceed expectations and prepare students for environment of accepting responsibility. Students show great respect and workmanship with other peers and staff.
Guidance counselors here really take the time to understand the children and the teachers really care. I am very pleased with this school system.
Terrific school that offers great oppurtunities for your child to excell in academics and sports. Incredible environment and teachers.
