Amazing school my daughter use to dislike math with a passion once she enrolled for her eighth grade year she now loves it! Excellent principle and staff. Definitely a family atmosphere.

Explorer West has some great teachers and a small community feel which is supportive to the kids. However I agree with the previous reviewer that the math program is not challenging enough for all. Explorer West is not able to accomodate kids who are advanced in math by moving them forward to work at the next grade level like some schools do. If your child is gifted at math in 5th grade be prepared for the possibility of a year of boredom once they hit 6th grade. Otherwise we are pretty happy with the school. If you are transferring from a Seattle public school be prepared to be on a different schedule with almost one less month of instruction than public shool. So far we've experienced longer school breaks and school is getting out earlier in the summer which can be problematic if you have kids in both public and private school.
This is our first year at Explorer West and we couldn't be happier! Our child was in the Spectrum program in the Seattle School District and we have been very happy with the experiences at Explorer West thus far. The teachers are all truly amazing the principal is fantastic and the environment is incredibly supportive. The teachers really do know your child and the whole school is about supporting each and every child to ensure they reach their full potential. I also love the planner that they teach the kids to use to help track their homework. For kids who tend to be a little unorganized this skill is invaluable once they get to high school! I was a little worried about not having a language like Spanish but our child just loves Latin! The only negative criticism I have would be that the Math program is good but may not be challenging enough for kids with advanced math skills. However the school is looking at the math curriculum this year and may update it for the next school year. Check this school out - you won't be disappointed!!
Fantastic school focused on individualized attention. The curriculum is challenging and the instruction excellent. The low teacher/student ratio allows immediate feedback and focus. Excellent outdoor education and sustainability programs.
My child is exceling at this school. They know how to 'do' middle school. Challenging and supportive environment.
I have had two students at EW (one an alumni) and they are taken from a variety of elementary schools started wherever they left off academically and taught all they need to know to succeed in high school. The faculty are caring but have high standards in behavior as well as academically. Every student I have talked with has been unfailingly polite and helpful. The school has always prized economic geographical gender personality and racial diversity and our family has benefited from and appreciated that.
My daughter is a 6th grader at ExpW and we have been nothing but delighted with the school. The curriculum is incredible--especially the school's use of outdoor education but more importantly my daughter loves it. She can't wait to get to school and is definitely upset if illness causes her to miss a day.
The academic program is very full and rich at Explorer West Middle School. Students are required to take Latin in addition to Math History English Science Art and PE. Additionally they have a winter program that allows the students to interact in a social settings for five consecutive Fridays. I highly recommend this school.
