East Whittier has an extremely strong mathematics department with teachers that really do care a lot about students and their success. They are dedicated teachers that make themselves available for students so they can be successful. As far as the comment that they are way to strict is ridiculous. East Whittier Middle School keeps their campus extremely safe and the only way to do that is to make students accountable for their actions.

This Schools.. Ehh.. They Make A Big Deal Out Of Everything.! Serio.! Way to strict.!!!
I am very pleased with this school. I had my son in private school through 5th grade and was skeptical about transferring him to private school. He continues to excel and I attribute it to the teachers and the guidance we provide @ home.
Over all great school. I give it 4 stars for all categories.
these students have improved on not only making friends but wisdom that that most teachers dont give enough of. The students test scores are amazing
Really great school the teachers are really good.
East Whittier is a great school. The teaching staff does a great job with the children. The principal is a great asset to the school.
I am a former student from East Whittier and it REALLY helped me a lot. I went to Ocean View for elementary and my grades there were average or below average. Once I got to East Whittier my grades went up a lot all three trimesters of all three years I got a 4.0 GPA.
I really like this school. I have more freinds and better grades.
They have some preatty good teachers that get very involved with their students.
I have disablities and I went there and there disablity program is good as long as the parent gets to know the teachers that the kids have.
Your child can certainly be challenged here. The honors math program is challenging. My 6th grader scored in the 95% on the Star testing in algebra. I would like to see a honors english program and teachers requiring more reading. In 6th grade they were only required to read one book a month or every month and 1/2. My student came from Ocean View Elementary and was required to read more books there than at East Whittier Middle School. I had no problems with the school during my childs 6th grade year. I was happy with the school. The music program is outstanding! The math program is outstanding! We just need to work on the english program which is adequate but could be outstanding.
i am an eighth grader at EWMS and i think that it is great. it has great honors programs and an outstanding music teacher. i have learned so much from the music program. it helps you in so many things. i enjoyed all the trips we took especially our tour to san francisco.
With one child in GATE and another with LD The GATE program consists of nothing but honors courses. Technically there are no honors classes for English and social studies only math and science. The educational program is not outstanding. A lot of energy goes into meeting the needs of ESL kids. The music program is a highlight and important to the social life of the school.
Parent envolvement at this school is very high from what Ive seen. This community takes pride in its schools and it shows. The only 'negative' thing I have to say about this school is that the sixth graders are not pprovided with enough opportunities as far as art music and sports are concerned which I think is true of most schools in la county. Our children need to be more well rounded with more exposure to the arts.
Since moving to this area and having a child who attended a School of Excellence; my child went from a B C average student to failing with lower C's and F's. Our suggestion is 'Parents do your homework when it comes to chosing a school for your child'. Two Concerned Parents
I have two boys in the school. One is in 8th grade one is in 6th. Both are in the honors math program which is conducted by very good teachers at each grade level. There is a lot of homework but the extra effort is worth it. My 8th grader was accepted into the high school honors math and language arts programs. One of the most impressive offerings of the school is their music program. It is exceptional. Again both boys are participating. My oldest has learned to play 3 instruments with proficiency and has developed a long term desire to continue studying music.
Poor Principal leadership lack of willingness to work with students with disabilities. In other words if your child's disablity becomes too much for them too handle then your child will become the problem not the staff's lack of education on the disability itself...shame on you EWMS or any other public school that would do such a thing to a student with ANY type of disability! Your hands are never tied. The Music Dept. is a wonderful instrument for the children. That is the only positive thing at this school!
East Whittier Middle School has an excellent music program in either band or orchestra. In addition the math and science honors courses are challenging. The Social Studies classes are good however since the social studies teacher is frequently also responsible for English the school is not as strong in English. Mr. Brock in 8th grade is an exception as he is an excellent English teacher and challenges the students. Parent involvement is high in the band/orchestra activities and the PTA activity is increasing. The principal Dr. Duran is strong and she is working both with the community and students to improve East Whittier. There is virtually no GATE program only honors science and math. There are athletics for 7 and 8 graders.
I am a former student of east whittier and had a great experience with awesome teachers! One thing that stood out and that i benefited from was the orchestra and band. I played in the orchestra and admired this program greatly!
