Airline Update: New Services Announced

Knowing what’s available to you as a traveler from different airlines can be key to finding the best deals on cheap airline tickets, so we’ve rounded up some of the newest announcements by the airline companies about where they’ve expanded service. Often times airlines will offer low introductory airfare of these new routes to draw travelers and attract clientele, so if you’re considering flying to any of the destinations, try checking out these new services.

American Airlines has announced a new non-stop flight between LaGuardia airport outside New York City to the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The airline also added another daily non-stop flight between Cedar Rapids and Dallas/Ft. Worth, where the airline is headquartered. The airline cited the fact that the market for travelers in Cedar Rapids is growing, and the airport officials are looking to expand their breadth to draw visitors and business to Cedar Rapids. Next up could be an additional non-stop flight from Washington D.C., officials say.

Hawaiian Airlines new non-stop service between Oakland and Honolulu began Thursday, opening a new way for flyers to access the Hawaiian Islands from the Bay Area. After the ATA and Aloha airlines abruptly ended their service, Hawaiian Airlines moved quickly to capitalize by adding the new route, their tenth destination on the United States mainland. The airline already offers service to San Francisco and San Jose, and opening this third option in such close proximity should allow travelers more options and the ability to find cheap airline tickets by comparing flights out of all three locations.

And in the future, be watching out for a possible merger between American and Continental Airlines, which could result in reducing competition across the board and higher fares to many locations. After the recent Delta/Northwest merger, these airlines feel pressured to increase their ability to serve and gain revenue by joining together, and this could be to the disadvantage of travelers, who will have less choices when flying to certain destinations.
