The best source for finding an attorney is generally a friend or colleague who used an attorney for a similar transaction, and was happy with the service.
If you don't know of anyone who can make a favorable recommendation, you can look to local or state bar associations. These organizations often have referral services for licensed members in the practice of real estate.
You can also look up real estate attorneys on Avvo, a service that rates and profiles all lawyers in a growing number of states. You can also post real estate questions on Avvo and get free answers from attorneys.
Another source for experienced real estate attorneys are professional organizations that focus on real estate practice, such as the American College of Real Estate Lawyers. The Fellows of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys often also perform home closings.
To search for a real estate attorney on the ACREL public website, scroll down on the home page to the "ACREL Member Search" box. Then you may fill in a name, nickname, firm, or city in the yellow box and click on search. OR you may click on Advanced Search. The Advanced Search page has a number of fields to choose from - the same as above plus "Areas of Participation." There is a drop down list from which to choose in the Areas field.
ACMA Fellows may be found by searching on this page.
