Stone section, Ruddle''s Fort, one of three forts built in the 1700''s to protect the settlers from Indians. Surveyed by George Washington on behalf of Lord Fairfax in 1748. Early 1800''s, the brick portion of the house was built and a passage way was constructed to connect the fort with the house. Upstairs of the fort was used as slave quarters.
