The community was first settled around 1860 in the valley of Kiowa Creek. Originally known as Gomer's Gulch-named for Gomer's Sawmill-the town was made up of a post office, stores, gambling halls, and saloons. Later, the town was relocated slightly downstream and renamed Elbert. In the 1880s, the Denver and New Orleans Railroad (later the Colorado and Southern Railroad) extended a line from Denver to Pueblo, with Elbert as one of its stops. The town grew quickly and, at its height, featured three large mercantile stores (including the Russell Gates Mercantile Company), two banks, a post office, two creameries, two hotels, and a wide range of businesses typical of a thriving prairie community. Today, Elbert retains much of its historic charm. The Presbyterian Church, built in 1889, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Russell Gates Mercantile Building, constructed in 1906, now serves as a community gathering place and is being lovingly restored by the Elbert Woman's Club. The Sacred Heart Catholic Church has been carefully restored, the old post office now houses a café, the Elbert Mercantile has become the South Forty Saloon, and the old lumber shed is home to City Limit Antiques & Reclaimed Materials. More recent additions include the Dancing Wolf Gallery, A Cowgirl's Heart Boutique and Gallery, Colorado Green Houses, and the offices of Kamerzell Brothers Well & Pump Service. Perfectly located in the heart of Elbert, this home is walking distance to the K-12 school, local restaurants, and antique shopping. Just 30 minutes to Colorado Springs, Castle Rock, or Parker, and an easy commute to Denver. Enjoy small-town charm with big-city amenities close by.
