This 1968 estate forest designer house is uniquely designed by the late Ronald Dirsmith, architect, engineer and builder.
For sale by owner with local experienced real estate attorney.
Available to tour with owner by appointment only.
A little bit about the estate is it was a donor architecturally engineered Post Nouveau estate funded by Muriel and Jack Hayward, 1965- Dec 2012. They sought to represent the architect since he began his first stylist project with this estate and then became renown internationally with Hugh Hefner in Rome, Italy, through his grotto design project, aircraft interiors and consultation. He also gained notoriety with large lodge type structures throughout the nation, heavily influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie rooflines, heavily cantilevered surface interior and exterior and large use of Flagstone installations. This lodge like room has a large 20’ high central single-sided fireplace, five interior exterior stone columns and a double sided rock wall in the great room and library. With three houses made into one building much like a zig zag Ranch, it has a bridge house in the center connecting the main house which is a large one room 30x30 great room with panoramic forest views on three sides. It includes a bilevel basement. With a cabin kitchen, utility and studio day bed and attached garage, to the double King suite house, a two story on slab, each has room for sitting areas and private bathroom and outdoor areas.
Nearly every room has an exterior door.
Photographs are prohibited due to private residence. Negotiable!

What the owner loves about this home
The one with nature experience is what I love about this place. It has large overhanging eaves, a bridge house and rear deck overlooking a lake bay and forest lands to develop into a nature site for wildlife and plants. It is quite an experience living in real architecture or a designer house. The large cathedral ceiling in the master suite and great room have opened my world, along with the high quality materials, custom cabinetry and floor to ceiling windows throughout, along with Cantilevered ceilings and floating walls and open trim. The custom kitchen cabin cabinets are hand made by the builder Ralph Arnold.
This five acre forest estate seeks an interested restoration project owner to continue the work begun by the Haywards to contribute architecture to this Southern Illinois region with the ultimate a forest house in the Shawnee Forest. It is nicely nestled in with 90 other forest custom homes and creates a neighborhood of unity and sharing with very low HOA costs for the road and additional twelve family septic system being added fees, located in Jackson County, a center hub in the nation, with 0/0 latitude longitude in Makanda, fifteen minutes away. I like the city’s Cedar Lake recreational site which is two miles from the house. This forestry home is ideally located only four miles SW SIUC’s campus.
