This cozy little cottage was built in 1892/3 by Mr. Lowe. The foundation for the back of the house is on a house have much history beginning in the Gold Rush. Most of the brick seen in the front walkway (and used for foundation support) was actually made on this lot in the late 1800’s. The street is named after Mr. Lowe. An old friend and historian of the town said he walks the streets at night just to check-up on the neighborhood. Now, there are numerous walkers who also enjoy our back street for a pleasant lunch, afternoon or evening walk. The house was converted to a brothel after Mr. Lowe’s death in 1900 according to historical records. In the 50’s the front was added on. In 1981/2 the house was remodeled by adding the retaining wall and a 2,100 sq ft. deck (great for entertaining) surrounding the entire house from custom cut local wood with a very soothing Triton water fountain in the front. Large back yard. The inside, you will see the warm wood additions in all rooms (the drywall work was overly taped). It was originally 2 bedrooms; my husband and I removed the wall from the front bedroom to enlarge the front room. In 1994, half of the windows were replaced with Pella windows following the historic character of the house and increasing the efficiency of the house. The SMART meter has been removed (at a cost per the 3-year PG&E ‘Opt Out’ program) back to the healthy, old-fashioned analog meter. The SMART meter was adding harmful EMF radiation into the house and outside near the power supply. SMART meters emit dangerous levels of EMF if too close. The fireplace is gas and is a good, clean heat source which also functions during power outages (just without the blower). A new 250-gal propane tank has been installed; no rental fee and propane prices are usually lower if researched. If you like to cook; the stove/oven is a convection and conventional with a grill. The fun greenhouse (with a new roof) is also the laundry room. Sunset views in the winter are spectacular and the night skies magnificent. All year long you can see the Valley lights in the evening, and on a clear day - Mr. Diablo in the Bay Area. The yard has something in bloom somewhere all year round. There is beautiful year-round color on the property. Wildlife is abundant: birds, hummingbirds (if you feed them), squirrels, an opossum, a few cats, deer, a neighborhood fox and neighborhood bats (great for eating mosquitoes). There is also a natural honeybee hive on the property after the Mosquito Fire which needs to be protected. They are amazing to watch, help agriculture in the yard and Foresthill. I do not push getting too close in the summers’ afternoon ‘in and out’ pollen collecting swarm around the hive – but watch at a distance. They do sting if caught in your hair. In the winter when they are dormant, there is a quiet buzz inside the log. The house is also very passive solar. There are numerous trees surrounding the house which produces shade and keeps the house cooler in the summer and the exposed deck in the southern winter sun heats up the back deck, so when opening the back door – heat can transfer to the inside of the house in mid-afternoon. There are many producing fruit trees, blackberries and grapes, along with a few new plantings. The house is located one block off the main road. Restaurants are nearby. Many parades (4th of July, Dec. Light Parade) can be watched from the deck, or walk up to the corner to watch closer. There are many annual events on the Main Street and at the local Memorial Park nearby. “The Lowe House” (not for sale as a rental) is the perfect first home, down-sizing, second home with much character, heart and warmth to enjoy life for the right person or persons who is willing to take the time to care on the beautiful ambiance it encompasses. Special Note: A Historical Property Appraisal was performed on the Lowe House one year ago.
