    What's special

Reminiscent of an earlier time in Hammond History, this house was once the home of Florence Hammond, daughter of Walter Hammond, and her husband, criminal attorney and judge Henry Clay Cleveland, who presided over the state bench in Hammond since 1922, a nephew of the two-term President Grover Cleveland. The garage was built to contain two large touring cars, a picture of their 1915 Buick still exists. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Dept. of the Interior for its architectural and historic distinction. The vintage 1923 house was the first built by contractor Karl H. who had purchased Eggebrecht's Second tract that he initially eventually subdivided and sold starting in the early 1920s , and features bulletproof construction with steel plates in the outside walls, double masonry in the foundation and foot-thick concrete between 1st and 2nd floor that also makes it very quiet upstairs. Nexus to bootlegging activity at this address has been confirmed and stories persist of Al Capone using the house to collect the proceeds for hooch sold in the neighborhood. This 94 year old brick home features high ceilings on both floors, four large bedrooms, two full baths and a powder room. The original French barrel tile roof and upper storey with its 4 dormers have been painstakingly restored to their original condition in 2016, to maintain the integrity of this structure's historic registry status. Crown moulding in most rooms, newer windows throughout. Large living room with wood burning fireplace (slate surround). Formal dining room with french doors to screened porch (could be stunning sun room), spacious kitchen with appliances. Main floor family room. The upper level has master bedroom with private bath, three large bedrooms, and large landing. The basement is unfinished, but plenty of room for storage. A portion of the back yard is fenced, and the rest open with mature trees/patio, and 2.5 car detached garage. To live there is to take advantage of Hammond's College Bound Program and all the many benefits and advantages of living in Hammond.
