You’ve heard it a million times — and know from experience — that real estate is all about relationships. You network to build your sphere of influence (SOI) and connect with new people. Your network might include fellow real estate professionals or potential clients, or people who are completely unrelated to real estate but attending an event hosted by an organization that interests you.
Nurture your network. What do you think people say about you when you’re not around? Stay in touch with colleagues, share your knowledge and reciprocate when they come through. Take care of your professional network and sphere of influence, and they’ll take care of you, evangelizing your brand when you’re not there. After all, it’s easy to talk about someone you like both personally and professionally.
Perfect your elevator pitch. How do you position yourself and showcase your business when you meet new people? Whether you’re at a networking event, a friend’s party, dropping the kids off at day care, or chatting at the gym, it’s important to put your best foot forward. The most successful real estate agents have a 30-second elevator pitch that’s rehearsed, yet conversational; factual, yet easily digestible; and well-timed but not pushy. Follow these helpful tips for writing your pitch and getting the most out of delivering it.
Find an event that fits. Whether it’s a real estate meetup or LinkedIn group, an off-hours event or an industry conference, pick one that fits your interests, lifestyle and business goals. Real estate meetup groups range from niche subjects like rehabbing and flipping to broader subjects such as real estate investing. For off-hour events, think school events, sporting activities, dinner parties, etc. If hanging out at a happy hour isn’t your thing, then don’t do it. Check your local chamber of commerce for ideas. Many of them offer after-hours networking events. A conference is a great way to catch up with colleagues you haven’t seen in a while, explore a city you’ve never visited before or hear more about current trends.
Get involved in your community. The need to network never ends. By participating in community activities, you get the opportunity to meet more folks who will wind up referring you to those they know in need of your services in the future. Great ways to promote your brand and your business could include: volunteering at your child’s school, sponsoring a team or coaching a sport you enjoy, engaging in local politics, or getting involved with a community garden.
