There were broken panels in the walls, and the staircase and hallways were filthy. The draft stoppers on the doors looked very old, but that could have been just the sheer amount of dirt built up on them. The downstairs apartment had character, most of it in a brick floor entry way and the beautiful wooden-paneled main room, but most of it was awkwardly arranged - the toilet and sink were in a separate room - down a hallway - from the shower. While this perhaps added to the 'unique' nature of the apartment, it would also greatly slow down the average person's daily routine. The upstairs apartment's refrigerator is placed on carpet, because there is not enough uncarpeted space for it... this is incredibly impractical for many reasons, not least of which is the possibility of food spilling onto the carpet from the fridge. Lots of old, drafty windows and baseboard heat mean the likelihood of a high electric bill. Overall, the cost of these apartments seems a bit high considering their awkward nature, poor planning, and the appearance of neglect of the interior of the common areas (not the responsibility of the renters) of the building.
