Engagement & Belonging

At Zillow, we believe creating a workplace that supports high engagement and a sense of belonging for all is key to our success as a company. We know employee engagement, a sense of belonging, and diversity are critical inputs to a higher performing team and higher performing company. This is why we are continuously working to embed all three across the employee life cycle.

Our Approach

At Zillow, we know the best performance happens when people are expected and encouraged to bring their unique experiences, ideas and voice to work. The more we include and empower each other, the better we innovate, design and deliver experiences that help more and more people get home.

Our Engagement & Belonging mission is to maximize the full potential of our people and company. We do this by helping business leaders and the broader organization identify opportunities in their business and talent practices to support stronger engagement, belonging, and diversity.

Our People

We embed engagement, belonging and diversity across the employee life cycle to enable all employees to achieve their full potential and succeed at Zillow.

Our Culture

We work with teams and leaders across Zillow to help all employees feel a strong sense of success, community and well-being in Cloud HQ.

Our Products & Partners

We partner across the business to identify ways to make our products and services more inclusive, accessible and effective for more and more customers.

Employee Resource Groups

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) at Zillow support our commitment to creating an equitable workplace for all. These employee-led groups create spaces to share common interests, build trust, and develop relationships, while also creating leadership and professional development opportunities for members. They are open to any employee who supports the group’s initiatives, whether as a self-identified member or an ally.

More opportunities to join in

Events

We host events that give employees a chance to connect with each other and with our local communities. These events include donation drives, well-being experiences, celebrations of identity, cultural activities, and more.

Virtual Dialogues

Every month, we offer opportunities where employees can come together to discuss and explore topics related to social identity, engagement and belonging.

Communities

Our community interest groups — one focused on parents and caregivers, and another on environmental sustainability — provide spaces where employees feel a sense of belonging, where they can share ideas and resources, and where they can come together to drive positive social change on specific causes, issues, or experiences that impact our world.

We support the causes you care about

Donation Matching

Zillow provides resources and incentives to support and encourage employees to give back in their communities. We continue to offer a donation-matching program, which matches any employee donation of up to $500 per year to qualifying nonprofit organizations. In 2023, employees donated a total of $295,140 to support nonprofits that meant the most to them. We also launched Z4G Community Grants, enabling employees to nominate 10 nonprofits to receive $10,000 grants each.

Volunteer Time Off

We offer employees an annual benefit of eight hours of volunteer time off (VTO) and a dollars-for-doers program for those who would prefer to donate their time to support causes important to them and their communities. In 2023, employees volunteered 4,030 hours in support of local nonprofit organizations. In addition to these volunteer hours, we sponsored 24 employee-led giving and volunteering campaigns throughout the year, with joint support from the Social Impact and Engagement & Belonging teams.

Our mission to get more and more people home

We believe housing is the foundation that enables people to thrive, contributing to financial and social stability for individuals, families and communities. Yet many people encounter barriers at every turn, whether they are renting, buying or getting a mortgage. While some progress has been made since the Fair Housing Act of 1968, the lasting impact of discriminatory policies continues to create obstacles to homeownership for people of color, including Black, Latine, Indigenous and other communities.

Our aim is to promote economic opportunity through a healthier housing market that’s fair, affordable, accessible and secure. Zillow engages in industry-leading economic research, public policy advocacy and product development that helps make home a reality for more people. We also engage our employees through giving and volunteering, to deliver impactful outcomes to more people.

Economic Research

Launched Racial Disparities in Housing dashboard to illuminate the current landscape of racial inequalities in housing, at the local level, and how they’ve evolved over time.

Public Policy

Facilitated legislation in 45 states for online notarization, changed laws in 38 states to allow remote work for mortgage loan officers, and secured new laws in four states to increase housing density. Led a national Fair Housing Month campaign to highlight the limited supply of voucher-friendly housing and advocate for policy solutions for low-income renters.

Social Impact Product

Launched a feature that reports timely Zillow Rental Payments to credit bureaus, helping renters improve their credit scores. Additionally, we enhanced the rental experience with tools like the Cost of Renting Summary and Room for Rent, providing valuable insights for lower-income renters and home buyers.

2023 Engagement & Belonging Annual Report

Reimagining an industry historically rife with racism and inequality challenges us to first do the work within our own walls, so that we can take this important work out to our communities and to everyone our business touches.

Partnerships

At Zillow, we partner with organizations that are committed to providing resources and opportunities to communities that represent a growing number of our customers and partners, but have been historically marginalized in tech. We believe in driving meaningful change through intentional partnerships. We listen to, walk alongside and provide financial support to partners in our communities whose work aligns with our social impact mission to increase housing security, economic opportunity and equitable industry.
