100 Squire Boone Rd. Mauckport, In 47142: Looking for historic properties in southern Indiana- Squire Boone Caverns consists of approx. 112 ac located at 100 Squire Boone Rd in Mauckport, IN. Currently the site has been developed as a tourist attraction and consists of 17 structures, undeveloped land, a creek, and a pond. The site is varying in terrain, ranging from creek bed to steep hillsides and is generally considered as undulating topography with several flat areas that are considered tillable. Primarily, the site is woodlands with several species of indigeous flora and fauna. The site is underlain by a vast karsts systym (cave system) with the main cave consisting of nearly 1700 ft of underground trails. The cave varies in ceiling height of about 7 ft to a maximum of 90 ft in the larger cavern, An underground stream flows through the main cave. The property has nature trails for walking and sightseeing as well as a hayride trail that is approx 5 m long. Most of the cabins and craft shops in the complex are very old bldgs that were located in the area surrounding the subject property. These structures were removed from the original locations and reconstructed as near original as possible in their present locations. The Gristmill was also located in an area near Laconia and brought to the present location and rebuilt. The grinding stones were found near White Cloud, IN then transferred to the present site and installed in the grinding apparatus of the gristmill. The underground cave trails are maintained by steel bridges and concrete walkways, Indirect lighting has been installed throughout, w/ electric cables laid in grooves that have been carved into the stone. The Candle shop and the cave bldg both are log replicas w/restrooms on 1st & 2nd levels. The museum, drink stand, snack bar, bakery, candy cabin , Art Gallery, Soap Shop and Grist Mill are handhewn log construction. The Mill has a stone foundation w/log construction and a shake roof. This is a 2-story bldg w/a lean-to, attached to one end. A log flume diverts the water from the nearby stream and is raised above ground level to rough cedar logs and provides water for the water wheel and operation of the mill. The bsmnt is a cellar type w/dirt floor and houses the operating gear for the grinding wheel & equipment. The first floor is the grinding area which is a lrg open rm w/unfin wooden floors and exposed log walls. The 2nd floor also has a wooden floor and exposed log walls and is used as a gift shop/retail area. Additional structures include manager and caretaker homes, Rock Shop, Woodworking Shop & shipping Shed. Most of these shops produced everyday needs of the pioneers livelyhood. The main parking area is approx. 2 ac and is crushed stone. There are small parking areas provided for employees scattered throughout the complex. The general lay of the land ranges from rolling to undulating with some steep hillsides and two streams running through the property. Roadway into the property is paved from the end of the county road, to parking lot.
