On a quiet neighborhood street, the house is conveniently located near dozens of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the city, great public and private schools, I-95 and a 10-minute walk from the Girard stop on the EL train. The historic home has been meticulously designed, renovated, and transformed into a bright and cozy space with tons of natural light, architectural charm and modern infrastructure. Featured by Remodelista, Design Sponge and used as the setting for several movies, photoshoots and documentaries the house has a rare timeless quality. With winding staircases, beautiful wide-plank old-growth pine flooring, built in bookshelves, extra tall ceilings with plaster crown molding, large open rooms with exposed beams and a 100ft long back yard shaded by a horse chestnut tree, it will feel like you have been transported to into an exciting world full of wonder as soon as you enter the front door. Once inside there is a library/study with two large windows, built-in floor to ceiling bookshelves and a daybed to curl up with a book. The dining room and kitchen are combined to create a large open space perfect for family gatherings. The kitchen, newly renovated has an Ilve natural gas range with overhead exhaust, a double door GE refrigerator with chest freezer, and custom-built cabinets made from reclaimed chestnut. The floor is heated with a hydronic radiant system and is covered with large chalkboard slate reclaimed from a nearby school. The cast iron double basin sink faces out to the huge private backyard perfect for curious children and pets. There is also a raised bed garden and a brick patio great for summer barbeques. Off the back of the kitchen is a bath and laundry room. After walking up the winding stairs with original railings to the second floor, there are two generously sized bedrooms with ample closet space and a large family room with vaulted ceilings and a wood burning stove. There is also a newly renovated full bath with tile floors and walls, cast iron clawfoot tub/shower and a reclaimed wood panel wall extracted from the library at the University of Pennsylvania. Continue up the winding stairs to the third floor where there are two more large bedrooms each with closets, and plenty of space to add an additional bath if needed. Throughout the house there are details that give it is timeless charm; Schoolhouse Electric light fixtures, custom painted accent walls, secret storage under the kitchen stair treads, a hidden barrel from the prohibition days, custom built in cabinets, custom trim and baseboards, Hardiplank siding, and a standing seam metal roof on the back section of the house. For cold or hot days, the house is temperature controlled with newly installed air-conditioning and original cast iron hot water radiators. The roof was replaced in 2019 with a transferable 10 year warranty. Outside in the back yard stands a separate 200 sqft office/studio. Built with reclaimed wood, a double french patio door, a huge bay window, custom Anderson windows and sky lights, the building has incredible natural light. Completely insulated, it has electricity, heat, internet and has served as a woodshop, art studio, photography studio, office, and a home schoolhouse. Every detail of the Peg and Awl house has been skillfully crafted.
