San Clemente is known as the "Spanish Village by the Sea" for its village atmosphere, magnificent Mediterranean style, breathtaking views and beautiful beaches with world-renowned surf and attracts 2.7 million people each year. The sun shines practically year-round, making San Clemente a perfect place for outdoor recreation. San Clemente offers 4.7 miles of sandy beaches, 25 parks, four golf courses, a pool club and scenic hiking trails, including a 4.5 mile natural beach trail. San Clemente also is home to a dozen art galleries. Each month and Arts and Crafts Fair is featured on Avenida Del Mar in downtown San Clemente. Every summer, the San Clemente Art Walk is held, as is the Village Art Fair and the Paint San Clemente/Plein Air Art Competition, which draws artists from all over Southern California. There are several shopping opportunities in San Clemente, including unique boutiques and antique stores downtown on Avenida del Mar, San Clemente's version of Main Street. New shopping opportunities are on the horizon, including the Talega Village Center, due to be completed this spring, and The Plaza at the San Clemente project, consisting of 650,000 square feet of retail planned for ocean-view Marblehead coastal area near Vista Hermosa. Casa Romantica Cultural Center serves as the cultural centerpiece of the city, featuring native landscaping, a library and local research archive, historical displays, a lecture series, and music, dance and theater performances. Casa Romantica was built in 1927 by San Clemente's founder Ole Hanson, who resided there with his family.
