    What's special

A house with provenance, Circa 1890 and a rare find in Newton Center. Listed on the Nat'l Register of Historic Places in 1986, it was built in the shingle style to a design by architect Samuel Brown for Adams D. Claflin, son of MA Gov. William Claflin. Rich in detail with vestiges of the Queen Anne style, there is asymmetrical massing and a wealth of projection and gables with elements of Colonial Revival. It is sited majestically atop a knoll overlooking 1.35 acres of rolling and terraced land filled with several mature plantings and specimen trees. It is one of three houses on a private way. Capturing maximum sunlight was clearly the objective at each stage of the design from the rounded studio room at the top, to the bay off the living room and in most rooms between, sunshine floods the house. Additions were made in the 1990s including a 3 car garage, and a new wing off the library housing an indoor lap pool with skylights and a tongue-in-groove vaulted ceiling.
