I write on food and agriculture and have a radio show as well on food and farming. I grew up in Mobile, AL and my family lives there and in Pensacola, FL. My husband (who is a tech wizard and great cook) and I spent 2021 & 2022 in Mobile and Pensacola caring for my 93-year-old Dad. We decided to buy a home in Pensacola 10 minutes away from sister in the beautiful old neighborhood of East Hill. We bought it to furnish and rent until we retire in several years from now. The interior has been completely repainted and all of the furnishings are either less than two years old or pieces that were in our family. Because we both love to cook (and do occasional catering) the kitchen has everything you could need for preparing wonderful meals. My husband and I actually met through cooking at a small fly-fishing lodge a friend owned. He and I swapped cooking for the lodge on alternate weekends in exchange for staying there and fishing. After a year of leaving notes for each other, we met in person and have now been together for 25 years. We have been landlords for over 30 years. Our first rentals in our new house in Pensacola have been to two wonderful couples that each had a young daughter. They have been great relationships and worked out well because we have such a good team to support our renters. Our gardener, our handyman, my sister and my nephew and his wife as well as a cousin who is married to a local contractor will. We also manage two smaller homes in CA on our property and have had renters for 16 years and have been blessed with amazing tenants. Prior to that we had a home which included a third-floor apartment and had two different wonderful tenants over the course of 5 years. Clear, kind, respectful communication is the key to things running smoothly for us and we look for that in our renters.
